Geography lesson (especially for Yanks)
« on: April 10, 2007, 06:51:35 AM »
OK, you know that I like some things about the US strongly but also dislike some things. One thing that appears very obvious to a European is how much most of you suck on geography. I'm drinking white wine out of a Bohemian crystal glass now. So, in which country was this glass manufactured?  8)

No, the wine was manufactured in Chile (the Falklands belong to the UK, by the way and are situated outside Argentina). I wonder where the glass was manufactured.

That's not geography exactly, that's more European history, since Bohemia has been part of so many countries.  Right now, I believe it is part of the Czech Republic, but it has been passed around quite a bit.  It is near Germany and Poland.

Yes, Bohemia is the mainland of the Czech Republic. When this glass was manufactured, it was part of Czechoslovakia. Slovakia ceded from Czechoslovakia through referendum on January 1th 1993. For most of it's existence, Bohemia has been part of the German Empire, though. The last time was 1939-45. Czechoslovakia existed from 1918-39 and from 1945-92. The Czech Republic now consists of Bohemia, Moravia and a small part of Silesia. (Yes, geography is one of my obsessions.)  :plus:

Macedonia. The Yugoslavian ex-province. There is a Greek Macedonia as well, which is why they call it "Former Yugoslavian Republic Of Macedonia". 8) Maybe I should go to Yugoslavia to get a gun. I don't know about their gun laws, but you can buy guns more easily in most eastern European countries, no matter the gun laws.

I wouldn't fancy buying a used gun in the Balkans, Lit. You never know what it was last used on.

Was the "Yugoslav" too much of a hint ??

No. Geography is one of my obsessions, so I knew from before what F.Y.R.O.M. was. I didn't have to look it up.
