I used to always believe that that which
one has to fight for wasn't worth having.

Not sure where I stand now - but I suspect
that it still holds. I busted my ass to get
my last BS, and am doing so for the MS,
but I'm not sure I'll be able to hold a
job with it.

On the other hand, all of the really good
things kind of just came to me.

No. But it reminds me of Bestler short story.
Involved being able to travel through time
and change things. The more he changed,
the more he disappeared into his own reality.

Did you read the one about the boy who could grant all his own wishes? (Damnit, can't remember title or author right now, it involved a little omnipotent boy, his whole village living in terror of him, the outside world incidentally destroyed by him, and a scene with him innocently sitting there making a rat devour itself for amusement.)
You'll never self-actualize the subconscious canopy of stardust with that attitude.

I don't think so. But it reminds me of
a story (totally serendipitous) where
the protagonist collects bodies &
parts for the alien overlords. There
ends up being some sort of rebellion,
and they leave him alive with just
a central nervous system. Don't
remember the title/author either
(probably the only link).

Suffering is a kind of pleasure.

Ever see the twilight zone* episode where a criminal dies and we follow him through the afterlife?  He discovers that he can have his ever wish, just by asking for it.  He likes it at first, but soon grows tired of it.  Finally, he says to his "guide" in this place:  "I'd like to go to the other place."  Answer:  "This IS the other place."  hell is what you don't want it to be.

Suffering for a cause trumps suffering for its own merits. Achieving a cause without suffering... that's the one I don't know how to rank.

How is hell suffering for a cause?

I didn't mean that it was (though technically, if you can get to purgatory, it is, isn't it?) - I was extrapolating the ideas to apply to real life.

Thank you, you've saved me from driving myself nuts all day.  :)

You're welcome, and yes, purgatory is, though hell isn't- glad to know you agree with the latter, lol.

Oh well, it's good to know that the Catholic Church has finally decided to get rid of the concept of Limbo! :P

It's even better that they allow abortions in Mexico City now.

Don't count your chickens yet!  The report I just read is that the issue is creating quite a lot of social upheaval.  Remember, the catholic church has a lot of power in Mexico.  Next to them, we're practically a country of atheists.

I have never understood why it should be necessity to become irrational in order to prove that you care, or indeed why it should be necessity to prove it at all - Avon

Catholics tend to be less fanatic.
BUT, they don't like to tolerate
abortion.

The catholic church and the mexican government have been like siamese twins joined at the hip since the conquistadors arrived.  But, as Calandale said, catholics are not as fanatical about their faith, but, there's always a few that make up for the majority. ::)
