I have. 

Cheapest option, comes with my internet connection, and makes it possible for me to call for something like half a ct per conversation to other landlines within my country, and for around 5 ct per conversation to many places all over the world, to a landline, and to some mobiles too. Works for me.

I do! I use it for DSL...and as a cellphone finder.

Well, work calls me on my mobile too. It's a thing I can switch off without a problem when at home with kids.
Unplugging the landline is a good thing to do now and then too.

IN this land, I have four distinct cell lines and a data pack (4GB/month - that is a decent amount of surfing on a phone) at scary quick download rates, at about 1.3 times the cost of a single land line connected to Ma' Bell and dial-up internet at fifty six K.

Hardly any comparison, really.


Yes, I pay an additional twenty four dollars for twenty Mb/s cable internet at home, but I would want that, anyway.

That's pretty damned good. I'm sure we'll get there, eventually, but right now it pays to have the landline.

The main difference between having a land line and a cell line (in the olden days) is 9111 service. (That means emergency response from local police and rescue services - they HAVE to have a way to find where the emergency is)

With a modern cell, onboard GPS tracker, etc, is just as fast as calling out your address by voice, if not even more fast.

These days, there is no reason to have a land line if you live near a major city (which I do- I live within fifty miles of the twelfth largest city on this continent). I have constant coverage in the micro/cell network, no matter where I go, locally.

There are some dead spots, but only a few. Prices are high.
And landlines are competing fiercely, thus come up with very nice phone and internet rates.
