My bank just called me, and asked me if I have used my credit card to buy something from a US bookstore yesterday, and something else (much more expensive) from Turkey, earlier today.

The short answer is no. 

So now my credit card is blocked and a new one will be sent to me within a few days.

They did you a huge favor!

A similar thing happened to me once and before they called me, the identity thief had set up an ebay account, complete with paypal and made several major purchases.

My Paypal and ebay accounts are still fucked up.

When it happened to me, somebody just started transferring money out of my account into theirs at the rate of $1000 a day. I had just made a $1000 transfer from one of my accounts to another so they didn't catch it at first.

I now have so many layers of identity theft protection it's screwed me up more than once trying to get into my own accounts.

(have been offline for a day and a half, along with the rest of this postcode area... and the stupid fuckers cancelled my car insurance so I had to ring them up and growl at them to reinstate it).

One time I thought I had it happening to me too, someone taking my card identity and using it but found out what the problem was and fixed it.

My card was a standard credit card and had no access to my banking, so I avoiding losing "cash,"  but there were many thousands of dollars of fraudulent charges on my card. They might have continued for a while longer, but they were stupid enough to open TWO PayPal accounts on the same day, using that card.

I was only partially hacked, thank goodness.

The card company got me another card by Fed-Ex the next day, completely audited my entire history, reversed every false charge and refunded over one hundred dollars in interest charges, as a sort of "apology."  So, I actually made some money.

total incompetence? mind you, it was partly my fault in my case for taking far too long to sort the paperwork out in the first place. I'm a scatterbrain.

Dunno what happened here. We were late paying but another insurance company was waiting in the aisles to take over the contract (for a fucking Volvo 745, for chrissakes), and confusion ensued. That other company had offered a contract but we hadn't signed anything.
