The latest version of swf-player in unstable Debian is lacking in features, it seems. Lots of sites won't work and Youtube claims I have no Flash installed. There's a newer version of swf-player but it's stuck upstream for some reason.

you're not using flashplugin-nonfree from the contrib section of teh repositories, are you? cos that one which downloads and configures the proper Adobe plugin which actually works, and works well.
