The word 'cunt'
« on: February 18, 2007, 08:45:50 AM »
Last night, I got into a dispute with quite a number of people at a new board I've been posting to.  This is a board full of sexual content; pornographic pictures of the members engaged in sex acts, and the frequent use of words like 'dick', 'pussy' and 'fuck', so I was surprised by the response I got to a comment I made.  One of the members; the woman who administrates the board, had juxtaposed the word 'babies' with a puking emoticon, so I followed up with "AKA: 'Cunt maggots'", which attracted scorn from 8 of the members there, with one saying "thank you for showing your mentality so early", and implying that I was a misogynist for using that word.

So what's so offensive about the word 'cunt', and why's it perfectly acceptable to use 'dick', 'pussy', 'fuck' and all the rest of those words?  Does anyone here regard the word 'cunt' as being inherently misogynistic?

Here's how the discussion went:

The question is do women in general find beauty in different places more emotionally satisfying; babies, for instance

Babies?  Babies?!

:puke:

But I believe beauty in another (adult) human being provokes just the same interests in me as it does in you.  It's a mammalian thing.

I'm also known to be so taken by 'beauty' in a piece of artwork, be it sarcasm by Dali, anger by Bacon, confusion by OnlyMe or anguish by Van Goch, that my face has leaked.

thank you for showing your mentality so early

What do you think you know about my mentality?

if someone is prepared to make such a comment on a forum, that is frequented by women, more than likely who take offence to the 'C' word, and especially the phrase in which you used, it would suggest there is a certain lack of respect there

It doesn't stem from a lack of respect.  It's designed as a humorous comment, following on from vix's post where she juxtaposes the word 'babies' with a puking emoticon, which is intended to take something conventionally regarded as beautiful and wholesome, and turn it into the complete opposite for humerous effect, and the wording was deliberately chosen to maximise that effect.  I'm sorry if you didn't like it, but it wasn't intended to be disrespectful.

Okay... personally I don't find the C word appropriate in any context... humourous or otherwise but then that's a very personal opinion and not one that everyone will share.

I think you maybe just have to take into account that not everyone will get your humour in two words.  :dontknow:

Then these women should ask themselves why they were offended by two words; if it's the words or the intentions behind the words that offend them.  If it's the word, a list of words not to use would be helpful to me, particularly on a site where shit, cock, pussy, cum etc are all perfectly acceptable, and if it's the intentions, they should ask themselves if they judged the intentions too quickly, because I'm not a misogynist, and anyone who judges me as a misogynist based on two words I type should seriously re-evaluate their reasons for doing so.

and when has anyone said anothing about hating women? i said it was disrespectful, whilst i understand your mention of other words which seem accepted, conversations involving many women over many years, has shown to me that the use of the 'C' word is one which they they detest, maybe you either havent had those sort of conversations, or have never considered their point of view?

Personally, as I said I was offended by the use of the C word full stop.  Again that's a very personal opinion and I'm sure there are lots here who are happy to use it and happy to hear it.

But I don't think that the use of that word, in the context you used it, is appropriate.  I don't need to justify my reasons for that other than it just wasn't very funny.

We all have to learn and "these women" as you put it are fellow members of a community that we're all part of.  A community that has welcomed you as we welcome all newbies and one who generally points out errors by anyone and everyone as we go along.  It's not a personal attack... don't be disheartened, just think about what you post before you post it!

It doesnt take a genius to work out that that phrase used might be offensive to some. Come on, you surely wouldnt use it in everyday life would you?

Ok, so it never occurred to you that some might not like it, a simple "oh dear, soz for any offence" would suffice. Stop digging and show your undoubted intelligence.

Disrespectful of whom?  If you claim it was disrespectful of women as a group, then you're claiming that it was, by definition, a misogynistic statement.

In this situation, I considered it appropriate.  Consider the following:

"That guy is a cunt.":  This uses a word for the female anatomy to refer to a man in an offensive manner, suggesting that associating femaleness with him is a negative thing, and thus identifying femaleness as bad.  It's perfectly reasonable to find this use offensive.

"The squirming, screaming maggot slithered out of her cunt."  Here, the female anatomy is being addressed directly in a parody of childbirth, and since it's being used in a situation where accentuating the unpleasantness of the situation is the overriding priority, it's logical to use the most unpleasant words available for describing  the situation.  'Cunt', being widely regarded as the most offensive word for referring to the female genitalia, is a natural choice, and actively plays off of the artificial offensiveness of the word, which was created by using it out of context to refer to unpleasant things that had nothing to do with female genitalia, and renders it less offensive in the process by returning it to it's proper context.

The word exists, and that's not going to change if you ignore it and pretend that it doesn't.  It's the context that's important, and calling someone a dick is just as offensive as calling someone a cunt, since they're functionally identical, but gender-switched statements, while referring to a man's dick spraying ejaculate is not offensive, and if that's not offensive, it's double-standards to regard referring to a cunt in the proper context as being offensive.

Ok, I'm sorry for offending you all, even if I don't agree with your reasons for being offended.

I just find calling a child/baby etc a cunt maggot very offensive, Maybe it's my motherly instinct/protection kicking in, I just don't think it sounds very nice, I am not offended by the word cunt or maggot, Just find them very offensive when used to refer to a child.

I won't ask you to justify your reasons for find it offensive if you'll accept that I have my own reasons, which I expressed in my reply to Wideboy, for not regarding it as an inherently offensive word.  I'm grateful for the warm welcome I've received, but learning is a two-way street, and while I've learned not to use the word 'cunt' on this site, I hope you, Wideboy, and any others who were offended have learned that appearances can be deceptive, and that judgements shouldn't be dished out hastily.  I have unconventional views on some things, and I'm sure many of the people here are aware of how that can give rise to problems when people are swift to judge, and I also have specific problems with interpreting social cues, so I'm not always aware of where the line between offensive and non-offensive is in any given situation.

And yet you still use it... in your response to me, even after I've pointed out several times that I find it offensive!

And where exactly have I judged you?

Your appearance has absolutely nothing to do with anything as far as I'm concerned and I'm very aware that opinions differ on all sorts of subjects and unconventional views are welcomed in any discussion.  Had I used a word that so many people came back on with the "shock" emoticon I would most definitely have considered the reasons behind that regardless of my opinion on the use of the word in question.

I don't think having specific problems with interpreting social cues is any excuse for repeatedly using a word that had been very clearly shown as one which people (men and women) find offensive.  You continued to use it even after it was pointed it out to you and I actually find your inference that I judge you on appearance even more offensive!

I will accept that i was quick to judge, i had no idea that you are only aware of the line between offensive and non offensive, when you feel you are being wronged, you are asking everyone to understand the very valid point that you have an opinion, and, like each member here, is allowed to offer that opinion

however, by making the original comment, and your subsequent defence of your opinion, you seem reluctant  to understand that other people too, have an opinion, and there seems to be a general consensus that no thought was given to the thoughts and feelings of those that would read it

I apologise if you have felt i have personally attacked you, it was not personal against you, id have said the same as i have done, regardless of its originator

Thanks, and I appreciate that we all have our differences and are entitled to them, thus why I voiced my own opinions on the matter, and why I'll refrain from using 'the word' out of respect of the majority opinion here.

As for there having been no thought given to how it would affect those who would read it, I'll have to mention at this point that I have Aspegers syndrome, which puts me at a disadvantage in predicting how people will respond to things, and in gauging how they have responded to things, thus I can't give any guarantees that I won't inadvertently offend people here in the future, and I was uncertain about what all the wordless emoticon-replies meant.

Actually, I don't find the word "cunt" particularly offensive in that context.  In other contexts, I just think of it as a very strong swear word, but not as demeaning to me as a woman.
it is well known that PMS Elle is evil.
I think you'd fit in a 12" or at least a 16" firework mortar
You win this thread because that's most unsettling to even think about.
