No, XP. I usually use SoundConverter on Mint.

Could be the encoder library. I haven't really tried to narrow it all down properly. I ripped a whole bunch of stuff to Witchy and now she's having problems with a few of the tracks, and since then I've noticed it happening on a few other occasions, blaming it on myself or a failed upgrade.

I guess I'll have to find out.

What do you guys use for compression if you need it?

The Lame or OggVorbis plugins, usually. But I'd rather not use compression at all, so FLAC.

I'd love to have something that can handle AC-3 but I'm not aware of any Linux apps that can do it.

I need to use MP3 too, though. I rip audio books for my wife to listen to on her phone (with a headset) while she's at work. She can do fine with 64k bitrate.

OK, a "friend" from work loaned me her Sade collection to rip. She has nineteen CD releases, including two exclusive live concerts (to one of which I am indulging my jazz/funk tastes at the moment) available only through fanclub email.

It works really well.

She can't tell TEH Difference in quality (I've tried this test repeatedly over the years with music and voice), until it gets into the fourteen kbps range. She seems to hear OK, but she just doesn't "listen"  to things the way we do.

At 64k, she can have five days worth of crap on her one gig phone.
