I buy legit, when I can afford to - but almost ALWAYS 'pre-listen' before parting company with cash, since I have only enough to spend on music for a fraction of the stuff I'd like to listen to. Last year I bought a few CDs on small independent labels by bands who I'd discovered through P2P downloads and enjoyed. I NEVER buy from RIAA affiliated labels - fuck them. If I want it bad enough I'll buy second-hand, and support artists by telling everyone who'll listen how fucking good they arer and going to gigs/buying merch when I can afford it. An interesting site if you're at all interested in the politics of music distribution is http://www.downhillbattle.org . :soapbox:

Oh yeh - and on their site, you can stream their tracks.

Most of my, fairly substantial, CD collection was bought used. It has been a couple of years since I had money for satisfying my musical appetite, though. I have to buy used.

I forgot to mention that I use a version of this for an avatar on one of the music boards I haunt. I'm a bad man. It's quite late for me to wash my hands of the industry, although the only new CDs that I have bought in about ten years have been some jazz box sets, the Experience Hendrix catalog, and the Joe Satriani catalog. I also watch for close-outs on end-of-printing-run issues, but those are not created equal.

Right now, Roger Waters, "Amused To Death".

Seems like a good place to post these... last year Fat Wreck Chords joined the RIAA. The fucking irony. :puke:

NOFX - Dinosaurs Will Die

This is not a test of the emergency broadcast system! This is the real thing!

Sit back watch it crumble, see the drowning watch the fall
I feel just terrible about it, that’s sarcasm,
Let it burn

I’m gonna make a toast when it falls apart
I’m gonna raise my glass abuv my heart
Then someone shouts... that’s what they get!

For all the years of hit and run
For all the piss broke bands on VH1
Where did all their money go
Don’t we all know

Parasitic music industry
as it destroys itself
We’ll show them how it’s supposed to be

Music written from devotion not ambition, not for fame
Zero people are exploited there are no tricks up our sleeve

Were gonna fight against the mass appeal
Were gonna kill the seven record deal
Make records that have more then one good song

The dinosaurs will slowly die and I do believe no one will cry
I’m just fucking glad I’m gonna be there to watch the fall
Prehistoric music industry three feet in la brea tar
Extinction never felt so good

If you think anyone will feel badly you are sadly mistaken
The time has come for evolution fuck collusion kill the five

What ever happened to the handshake
Whatever happened to deals no one would break
Whatever happened to integrity

It’s still there it always was for playing music just because
A million reasons why all dinosaurs must (will) die

One of my favourite albums is An American Prayer.  The majority of it is the poetry of Jim Morrison which he recorded in 1970 set to music by the remaining Doors in 1978.  It also includes a live version of Roadhouse blues- which imo live is one of the best ever recorded.

Despite the idea seeming a bit too much like a cut and past job it is excellently done.

My favourite tracks and favourite lines from those tracks:

Black polished chrome:
                                'The music was new
                                black polished chrome
                                And came over the summer
                                 like liquid night.'

Angels and sailors:
'The Spanish girl begins to bleed
                          She says her period
                          It's Catholic heaven
I have an ancient Indian crucifix around my neck
My chest is hard and brown
Lying on stained, wretched sheets with a bleeding virgin
                       We could plan a murder
                        Or start a religion.'

The Movie- isn't one of the best tracks but makes it onto the list just for the way he says the last line, it always sends shivers down my spine:
'Silver stream, silvery scream   Oooooh, impossible concentration.'

And although I could pick more I won't because I can tell this will be dull to anyone but me, I'll just skip to my favourite track now:

A feast of friends- it affects me like no other song ever has, as soon as it starts it just has a powerful affect on me and I always fill up a little when I listen to it.   The music is  Adagio by Albinoni and here's the lyrics:

 Wow, I'm sick of doubt
Live in the light of certain
South
Cruel bindings

The servants have the power
Dog-men & their mean women
Pulling poor blankets over our sailors

I'm sick of dour faces
Staring at me from the T.V. tower
I want roses in my garden bower; dig?
Royal babies, rubies
Must now replace aborted
Strangers in the mud
These mutants, blood-meal
For the plant that's plowed

They are waiting to take us
Into the severed garden
Do you know how pale & wanton thrillful
Comes death on a strange hour
Unannounced, unplanned for
Like a scaring over-friendly guest
You've brought to bed
Death makes angels of us all
& Gives us wings
Where we had shoulders
Smooth as raven's claws

No more money, no more fancy dress
This other Kingdom seems by far the best
Until its other jaw reveals incest
& Loose obedience to a vegetable law

I will not go
Prefer a Feast of Friends
To the Giant Family

Yes- I can't write about music worth a shit.

Sorry, Dunc, only one of them, so far. I'm on a dial-up now, trying to economize, and it took about four hours (and four or five tries) to download. Hopefully in the coming months I'll be able to get a real connection, again. I didn't keep it, but I enjoyed a lot of the music. You have, almost single-handedly, expanded my expectations when it comes to Euro music and I thank you for that. Please, continue.

Right now, a comprehensive playlist of early Pink Floyd (w/Sid).

Poor Syd. Shine on, you mad, dribbling fucker.

On a side note, The Madcap Laughs is fascinating listening. I lost my copy.  :-\

Nearly a religious experience of a fascinating listen, I'd say.

Now playing - Rammstein - Mutter, the album which got me into Rammstein. 'Sonne' still sends shivers down my spine - but the whole fucked up Brothers Grimm vibe is enough to convert anyone, surely? :headbang:

Yeah, me, too.
Just thought about you, PI, because I'm playing "Riders On The Storm", right now. I actually have it on repeat for about four times already. It's one of my all time favorites. Lots more Doors to come.

Listening to Hocico - Aqui y ahora en el silencio. Who'd have thought Mexico would be a source of excellent dark electro?  Too much sunshine surely. 8) Still, Hocico produce some of the most distinctive and listenable 'terror EBM' on the scene. Me likey.

Am currently listening to a guilty pleasure of mine- the bloodhound gang's Hooray for boobies album. I know they're not the most musically talented bunch of people, they have lyrics that probably offend everyone at some point, but they just cheer me up.  You've got to laugh at someone who will ask their mother for suggestions when trying to think of words that rhyme with 'vagina' and when she asks 'why don't you change the word vagina to something else', answers 'like box or pussy or cunt.'

And who hasn't wished all this would happen to someone that's pissed them off?:

You must die I alone am best!

I hope ya flip some guy the bird
He cuts you off and you're forced to swerve
In front of the Beatles' tour bus
A Bookmobile and a Mack truck
Hauling hazardous biological waste
The light turns red you have no brakes
And "Hard Copy" gets it all on tape
So you can see the look on your face

Die Die Die Die Die Die Die
Die Die Die Die Die Die Die

I hope your Pinto begins to spin
Takes out a disabled Vietnam Veteran
Mows down a Nobel Peace Prize Winner
And maybe some orphans having Christmas dinner
Perhaps even the British Royal family
And the Rabbi that's clutching the bottle-fed-puppy
And we can't forget the newlyweds
And those Jerry's Kids are as good as dead

I hope this helps to emphasize
I hope this helps to clarify
I hope you die

I hope your cellmate thinks he's God
But C. N. N. refer to him as "Bowling Ball Bag Bob"
Serving time again for abuse of a corpse
Only this time the victim's a Clydesdale horse
While he masturbates to photos of livestock
He does the "Silence of the Lambs" dance to Christian Rock
Eats feces and quotes from "Deliverance"
And flights with his imaginary playmate Vince

Die Die Die Die Die Die Die
Die Die Die Die Die Die Die

I hope he grins like Jack Nicholson
And forces you to play a game called "Balls On Chin"
And whatever happens next is all a blur
But you remember "fist" can be a verb
And when you finally regain consciousness
You're bound and gagged in a wedding dress
And the prison guard looks the other way
Cause he's the guy ya flipped the bird the other day

I hope this helps to emphasize
I hope this helps to clarify
I hope you die

I hope you die

I grew up near Mexico, ya know. I have always been impressed with the "average" level of musicianship, displayed by the ones trying to capitalize on the markets. Whatever is current, wherever, Mexico has its imitators.  "Back in the old days" when I was still in that scene, I heard multiple Mexican "Black Sabbath" bands, when they were popular, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, etc. Later on stuff like The Police, U2, etc. The "Mexican Nirvana" that I heard was excellent!

I'm glad to hear that you are not dissappointed with Hocico. I'm not sure what it means ... there's a slang word, hocicon, that means "big ears", but not like Dumbo. It means that you listen to things you not supposed to or that you eavesdrop. That may be the root of their name. That would be cool. I'll have to google for them!
