yep. sorry, FWM, I've no objections whatsoever to annoying Reggie with irrelevancies but, personally.  i still feel talked-out on that topic . FWIW,  my view is much the same as yours... but somewhat more nuanced. I mean the need for non-gender-specific third -person plural pronoun was appreciated long before the PC brigade got their teeth into "they" .  The word had already been pushed right up to its elastic limit, in the intersts of filling that gap.  Can't blamethe PC brigade for that much, just for stupidly and arrogantly stretching it that little bit further , instead of turning around and looking for a better solution.

I feel like the word, "they" has been abused. The new definition originates from controlling, angry people who got their own way with fiddling with the English language and I don't like it.

I don't have any particularly strong feelings about it.

If I am uncertain of someone's gender I use "they" as an all-purpose pronoun. Because I've heard that that is the polite thing to do. English isn't a dead language and words can and do change in how they are used and in what they mean.
