Mass grave are the way to go if they let people out too early.
No need to let anyone out in Sweden. It's pretty amazing how they have managed to avoid a blowout in mortality without the sort of measures taken elsewhere.
Actually most Swedes do self-isolate, which is why the all-voluntary measures aren't a complete failure. The morons enjoying the sun in busy restaurants as seen on CNN and elsewhere are thankfully still a small minority. They are the ones that might tip the scales, eventually.
But we've utterly failed to protect our elders. Around half of the 2,700 or so dead are 70 or older. A significant number of the remaining half are immigrants from places with larger families and a different culture around socialising and less trust in governments and other authorities.
And that's a really big reason why our approach would never ever work in places like the UK or the US. Swedes, for better or worse, tend to trust their authorities and do as they are told.
I think probably the countries we remain most comparable with are Denmark and Norway, both of whom imposed strict lockdown measures and have a fraction of our mortality rate. Some Swedish scientists say that they'll catch up eventually, but many others disagree.
We're probably fucked.
An unofficial government report was leaked to the media in the US, suggesting that by June there will be 3,000 people dying per day. Based on their current trajectory with allowing the lockdowns to expire, that doesn't sound unlikely.
Oh yes, they will get to 100,000 and more very quickly if they open up the country.
