Strong pound
« on: January 23, 2007, 05:25:00 PM »
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6291343.stm

Is anyone planning a holiday to take advantage of it?  Anyone bought stuff from abroad online due to the strong pound?  Does a strong pound have any importance beyond making it cheaper to go abroad?  How do the dirty foreigners among you feel about your worthless currency?   :P

Trouble with buying stuff from abroad is it seems to be a gamble whether you're going to get hit with import tax or not.

Honestly when I saw this topic, I thought I was looking at the Sex forum because I have a dirty dirty mind.
And as always, these are simply my worthless opinions.

The pound has broken the $2 mark; it's now worth $2.02336.

Maybe; I don't keep that close a track of it.

it just means that things are more expensive to produce which means that you rely heavily on imports as the job opportunities decrease.
Misunderstood.

i hear that france and italy are seeking ways to encourage the EU to decrease the value of the pound.

on the bright side, a barrel of oil should cost less.  are your gas prices dropping?

You Brittons had the right idea by not going to the Euro. ;D
Can't agree with this one at all.  Regional currency union has real economic benefits (ask much of the British financial community) and is not just a stealth tactic to decrease sovereignty in the EU's favour.  Besides, a strong national currency is a curse as much as a blessing.  Historically, an over-strong pound has led to disaster for the British economy; among other things, it decreases investment (foreign and domestic) and makes it difficult to export anything, including services.

Anyroad, enjoy the holiday trips!  Definitely a good time for 'em (and a lousy time for me to be planning a research trip to Europe...).
