Republican Rage
« on: March 15, 2019, 03:14:47 PM »
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/11/opinion/captain-marvel-republican-rage.html

Quote
My starting point is a weekend tweet from Representative Devin Nunes of California, who headed the House Intelligence Committee until the House changed hands after the midterms. In that role, he basically acted as Donald Trump’s stonewaller in chief, doing everything he could to prevent any real investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Vladimir Putin.

But his tweet wasn’t about that. It was about a waitress who, citing the “straw police,” asked his dining party if they wanted straws. “Welcome to Socialism in California!” Nunes thundered.

If this seems like a weird aberration — he wasn’t even denied a straw, just asked if he wanted one — you need to realize that rage explosions over seemingly silly things are extremely common on the right. By all accounts, the biggest applause line at the Conservative Political Action Conference — eliciting chants of “U-S-A, U-S-A!” — was the claim that Democrats are coming for your hamburgers, just like Stalin. (They aren’t, and for the record, Stalin was a mass murderer, but objectively pro-burger.)

I'd strongly recommend against Pappy or Al reading this. High risk of head explosion.

But Odeon, Icequeen, Cal and one or two others might enjoy it.

Some of the comments are just as good as the article. The comments are sorted by either "readers' picks" or "NYT picks" so you can cherrypick someone else's idea of the best comments (so you don't need to read all 1500 or so).

Good article.

Religious conservatives foaming at the mouth literally everywhere here...like rabies.

Over what...I haven't really understood since the beginning...95% of them I know have nice houses, well paying jobs/retirement checks, no kids or their kids are grown and they aren't hurting for anything, they avoid the sunlight, order junk on QVC 24/7, hire contractors to do any work that needs done, and trade their car in every two years on a new model... and with all that... they watch Fox news all day long and bitch about how bad the world is treating them.

We demand to be served straws without being asked. It's a god-given right.

This country is going to hell.

You know the funny thing is despite what you carry on with, neither I nor Pappy are Conservatives and whilst I am a Trump Supporter Pappy is not.

Both of us are anti-Feminist but I used to love reading Captain Marvel as a kid. I remember my introduction in Uncanny X-Men 163-166. What was not to like? She was a warrior. Tough, courageous, powerful and compassionate. Not a Feminist but certainly a powerful female in the Marvel Universe which is full of powerful female superheroes and supervillians.

But here is the thing there are actually (I know you will find this really laughable) people so very, very superficial and stupid that they would have next to no exposure on Captain Marvel and yet deem to pretend to not only know what or who she is but to presume a better understanding of her than I AND presume too that I had some ill-informed opinion on her.

Can you imagine the stupidity and arrogance it takes, based on pretty much nothing, too? How ridiculous are such people?

It is these same kinds of people no doubt who based on this same lack of knowledge and basing the same level of assumption get near on all my beliefs on any topic consistently wrong.

How stupid do you think such people are Minister of Silly Walks?

As to the article, what exactly is a man who happens to be republican making some off-the-cuff remark about straws suddenly become "rage" and not ONLY rage but "Republican Rage" and not ONLY Republican rage but some commonly and widely held Republican rage?

Doesn't really explain that at all does it? It was kind of make some far fetched assumptions based on nothing? Why does that feel familiar?

Captain Marvel a bit Feminist it claims? I have no idea if this is true or not but I think that this would be a mistake as the Captain Marvel character of the comic books was not Feminist. I think that many people find Feminism off-putting and people are getting tired of Hollywood off-screen and on-screen trying to inject identity politics into Film and conversation. If Captain Marvel is going to be taking the movie goer on a cosmic escapism they do not want some back to Earth contentious "Toxic Masculinity" or stupid tropes about the incompetence/evils/immorality of white men or suggestions that girls can do it by themselves. This is not a chance to thrust this kind of bullshit on the audience. Captain Marvel is not a feminist but she is a kick arse warrior and a hero on her own terms.

As to Devin Nunes being the stonewaller. No, actually this is not true. Only the very dishonest would still pretend that the FISA warrants and the subsequent wiretaps were both above board and that there was grounds to do the wiretaps. Only the dishonest peddle this still. Who in the DOJ and FBI has been fired or resigned and why? What is happening to Andy McCabe and why? What was left out of the FISA applications and why? What were the connections between Perkins Coie, Fusion GPS, DOJ, FBI, DNC, Christopher Steele, Nellie Ohr, Bruce Ohr, Russian Intelligence?

Next couple of months I think you will find the report will come out from Mueller and you will see there is NO connection to Russia and Trump. But then there will be some big hits coming from Trump and it will be two years worth with interest.

No my head has not exploded with this propaganda piece. Why do you imagine it would? I mean it was a rather poorly written piece with far fetched irrational conclusions and bad base assumptions and anti-Trump, but it is the New York Times. We expect no less. Why would my head explode over that?

I dunno Al, you make a lot of posts, with a lot of words, about politics. If, after all that, nobody can work out what your political persuasions are.... maybe it's you?

 :indeed:

Since day one here, I have made it clear that I'm Libertarian. My views have shifted here and there but my core values of maximum civil liberties for the individual, limited government and the right of all peaceful nonviolent citizens to own sufficient weaponry to wage civil war against the government, haven't changed.   :viking:

THIS is what is happening. It is willful ignorance.

EDIT:

The more Left the mainstream Left goes the further right the Centre is. That is why anyone who is Classical Liberal, Libertarian, or Moderate Conservative and their views is consider Far Right. Not hard for me to assess a perspective. If they are sharing similar views to mine I presume them to be clustered somewhere around the political centre. If they are more right than me I will presume them to be moderate unless they are extreme in their Right  wing views.

For someone so far Left, they do not have that in them. Everything is Right of them and FAR right from them EVEN people who are not on the Right or only moderately on the Right.

Conservatives are those opposed to rapid (or any) change. Their opposite is Radical, not Liberal.

Liberal's opposite is Authoritarian. Not Conservative.

Socialism, is by its nature, more authoritarian, and thus less liberal, than capitalism.
One can be a conservative socialist, if it is the established order.

You could argue that, based on the number of people in prison, the US is one of the most authoritarian places on Earth.

"Only the very dishonest would...", "only an idiot would..."

A phrase like that in Al's posts is usually a tell-tale sign of him popping a vein, especially when accompanied by a long, nonsensical rant of things he thinks are related to the topic at hand.

Hilarious.

You're almost describing the Dutch political system. The opposite of conservatist being progressive.

But we make it complicated. We've got conservative socialists and progressive socialists and conservative and progressive 'capitalists'. Liberalism goes from left to right too. Same as authoritarian.
So yeah, we've got over twenty parties to pick from, during elections.  :zoinks:

Interesting.

Misinterpretation, misrepresentation, false equivalency, misreporting, strawmanning and lies generally, is your stock in trade, You seem to find it strange that someone should question other's intent when they point this out in yourself (or with other people) AND you seem to think that someone pointing out base dishonest or stupidity would cause their veins to pop.

Why is that Odeon? Why are you so very divorced from what normal and rational people feel or react to? Is this projecting how you may react in such a situation or are you creating a strawman from which to challenge and fend off? What is going on in that wacky muddled head of yours?
