I have never seen one, but there was a guy my father knew who was restoring a brass era car. He had gas lit lights (or maybe kerosene lights) on each side of his car with a kind of shade that protected the drivers eyes and when he wanted to turn, he momentarily rotated the light so that drivers behind him could see the light for a moment, indicating his intention to turn. The other benefit was that the light now shined in the direction of the turn.
On a different note: an odd thing I saw a few days ago. You do know that Helen Keller was restricted from driving, right? But why?
It was mainly that she was a woman. Women were not allowed to drive back then, let alone vote.
