Dermatillomania
« on: January 19, 2007, 07:46:42 PM »
Article on Dermatillomania a.k.a. compulsive skin-picking.  I should have known there would be a wikipedia entry on it.

Who else has it?  I'm a cuticle attacker.  It's gotten worse lately due to a combination of my being more nervous all the time and the weather being dry, so the skin is more delicate.  Lotion-ing the hll out of my hands doesn't seem to help much (either nice, pretty-smelling lotion or that eucarin shit).

Scabs as well for me, the the cuticle thing is CONSTANT.  It sucks because I start bleeding from some finger almost every day now, and I don't seem to clot particularly fast, so I spend most of my time walking around with tissue and tape on my fingers because I hate band-aids.

Can't pick the skin on those, too painful. My eyebrows and eyelashes are my main repetitive motion.. I have no eyebrows from pulling them so much. But that is another named habit, lol.

The hair thing is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichotillomania

And I think I may have fucked up the pain sensors in my cuticles or something because they don't really hurt unless I rip them to the point where they bleed.

I pick dead skin from my feet and I pick damaged hairs from my eyebrows and eyelids. It's very satisfying.

I pick at and bite my cuticles too, but I try not to make them bleed.  If you put Neosporin ointment on the damaged areas, under a Band-aid, they heal more quickly.  Neosporin also works to heal the dried out cracked skin.

I used to pull out my eyelashes, but I stopped doing that.

I pick and scratch at my cuticles constantly, but I don't really bite them, unless I get a really big bloody one snagging on everything. I never stop until they hurt like hell. I don't mess with my hair much, but an ingrown hair will turn into a scar, because I will keep tearing at it until it's a huge bloody hole.

I don't do anything like that.  I used to bite my nails as a kid, but I stopped when I was about 5 or something.

I don't bite my nails but I sure do pick at them. My thumbs are the worst right now as I have picked at the cuticles and they bled.
I can't help but do it, sometimes I don't even think about it. Other times it kind of calms me down if I am getting too nervous.

I never knew there was a proper name for it.

Big. Time.

I don't really care how scarred up I get, as long as it doesn't cause permenant or serious nerve damage i'm okay with it.  I tear the shit out of my cuticles, I have torn OFF my two big toe nails.  I pick ANYTHING which could be construed as a blackhead or a zit(even small lumps on my scalp).  I tear the dry skin off my lips.  I pick earwax out of my ears.  The works.
And as always, these are simply my worthless opinions.
