Making transparent GIFs...

Anyone know how to do this with the GIMP, or know of an idiot proof guide to doing so?  I have a bunch of emotes I want to be able to make transparent; they're already animated with Movies13, but that program hates transparencies.

That was just clicking 'export'; I don't know much about making them from scratch.  I've got some crappy shareware program for it that slaps an ad across any I make, but I've only used it once, and don't feel like paying to unlock it.  I also know that they can be made by editing hex code with a hex editor, but that's a bit out of my depth.
