OK, I used a bit of an OTT title because well, I felt like it.

My problem is I've just bought an LED bulb, screwed it into a lamp, and when I switch the lamp on it emits a high pitched noise.

What is the problem with it? Are all LED bulbs like that? Can anyone think of a reason why that particular bulb would emit a noise?

It's actually slightly unusual to use an Edison bulb, rather than a Bayonet, so there aren't any Edison bulbs around the house. I'll have to go out and get another one. But which do I avoid that would make a high pitched sound?

And BTW, I think Bayonets are fiddly and annoying.

Should not make that noise. Other bulbs that save energy do emit a high pitched buzz, but not LED's. Got some LED bulbs here. Hated the other saving bulbs, was glad LED became more affordable.

Did you screw it into a bajonet fitting? In that case what you hear will probably be because of a bad contact of bulb and power.

  I wouldn't do that! It is a screw fitting. I was just making that point because there were no other Edison bulbs in the house to test it on that particular lamp.

I tried screwing it in tighter. Still a noise. The incandescent bulbs don't do that.

My kitchen flourescent light fixture also emits high freq noise, though it flickers as well, so I never use it. So annoying!

Or, it's a cheap LED with huge tolerances during manufacturing.

You can make LED bulbs make a noise on dimmer switches or in variable output lamps by turning power down.  If the lamp has a varable brightness control then you need a specialist LED bulb.

I thought of this too. However, it is not a dimmable lamp, just an on/off switch. Thanks.
