I saw this today and it inspired me to resurrect the stupid Christmas thread.  :2thumbsup:

Walmart has partnered with Intel to put on holiday light shows powered by drones at eight of their stores.  :orly:

That's kind of cool.

Consider myself Jewish and (separately) not being motivated to celebrate Christmas - messy house, too much work to put up a tree, and I hate seeing Christmas trees at New Year's Eve.

So this year I've been doing a lot of thinking about the expectations of life.  I've come down on the side of believing that Christmas is a religious holiday for Christians.  Yes, it's okay to have a birthday cake for Jesus, but the day should be spent in thankfulness for the birth of Jesus.  No presents.  Presents should be given on Epiphany when the Magi brought their presents to Jesus.  So I've explained my thoughts to my Christian friends and they know they'll get a few thoughtful presents on Jan 6.

Remember Charles Dickens invented the current view of Christmas.

Same. Indoor decorations make the house feel cluttered. The tree is only up about two weeks, and comes down right away afterward. When Christmas is over, it's over, and really don't want to look at it anymore.

I see Xmas as a repurposed pagan festival.

So I have as much right to celebrate Xmas as the Xtians do.

Kids are teens now and expecting more expensive presents like laptops. And iPhones.

So there's gonna be a big hole in the budget this month. In some countries your salary is paid in 13 monthly instalments, with a double pay packet in December. I like that idea.

It *is* a repurposed pagan festival, at least around here.

Like that idea too. Before the acquisition, used to be able to cash in two weeks of vacation pay so that time was saved and used as christmas fund. Four weeks of time off is difficult to use up anyway, so it was a great option. Now it's use it or lose it, so this is the second year of having to save for the holidays.

It is. Christians adopted the traditions and slapped a name on it...in Rome it was a feast called Saturnalia that celebrated the solstice.

Then you have Yuletide, which is the pre-Christian Germanic Midwinter celebration.
http://thepaganjourney.weebly.com/yule.html

"The evergreen trees signaled the "return of life" and "light" as the winter solstice meant the days were starting to get longer."

Mistletoe...was started by the Druids, who believed it was an all-powerful healing item from the sacred oak tree.

"If you met someone in the forest you gave them the sign of peace under the mistletoe so people started to hang mistletoe above their doorways as a symbol of peace. This was such a powerful symbol of paganism that English churches actually banned the use of it,"

"Holly is sacred to Holle, the Germanic underworld goddess, and symbolizes everlasting life, goodwill and potent life energy."

Not really into it this year...Yule, Christmas, whatever. Meh. Boy will be spending it with girlfriend, and no visitors with covid this year. Hung some lights this year around the house, but that's about it...no tree. I spend 95% of my time pulling the cats out of it anyway. :lol1:

That last one looks particularly ominous.

All the presents are wrapped and everything we need - including food and drink - is already bought.  4 days early.

Now I get to sit back and watch everyone else panic.
