Fuck Thanksgiving and Family time.

I know most of our forum members are not interested in American traditions, but this coming Thursday is considered a holiday for most of us. The big box store I work at, "our store," is going to open for business on Thanksgiving Day at five PM, this Thursday.

(yep, right in the middle of family sit downs, football, apple pie, etc.etc.)

I actually am expected to be at work at one PM to get MY area ready to open for business. We have a foreign (non-American) CEO who has been quoted as saying, "It's hard to win the game if you do not show up and play!"

While he has gone over the top many ways in attempting to make our company more viable in this current squeak-assed market, it is things like discounting and even exploiting our family time that he has tapped to help us satisfy the shareholders, none of whom work here, btw. To hell with the line soldiers or the daily faithful.

I have heard that there is a massive boycott of stores that are open on Thursday; Walmart, Target, Best Buy, HH Gregg, Macy's, etc. but not sure how wide spread this is going to be.

Not that I am trying to poison my paycheck, but has anyone else heard about this or are you intending to avoid stores this season who are open on Thanksgiving Day?

Couple of years ago my brother had to keep the shop open on December 24th till 9pm. All other shops had closed at 5pm or earlier. His boss had other ideas. Not a customer came by.

Weekends, Christmas, other festivities to share with family are hyped more and more it seems. At the same time shops are open more and more. Makes no sense to me.

Growing up holidays were peaceful, quiet, relaxed. Just normally my mom, dad, and me.

When we moved then we had the extended family that expected us to come to dinner and it was like opening the floodgates of hell.

I remember volunteering to work holidays so that others wouldn't have to.  :laugh:

I'm the only non American in a team of 11 people so I'm going to be the only one working tomorrow.  I'm expecting it to be hell on earth.

Mostly remote working based out of Pittsburg.  I'm in the UK.  They're in Penn, Ohio, Philly and I think one is in Arkansas.  He's the bloke with the big pickup truck.

I've worked on those days too. But that was on a place that needed people working. It was a 24/7 company. And regular staff would have their shifts somewhere between 6:00 am and midnight. My brother worked in the only shop opened on Xmas eve, selling big sunscreens for houses, in a country that hardly sees sun in December.

They are right. They wanted transportation on those days too. I did not mind working on those days to make that possible.

Having to sell mascara or CD's on those days I would mind.
