How often do you feel threathened enough to show your gun to a customer? Barbershop is the place where a customer makes him or herself vulnerable, sitting in a lower position while the barber is in a higher standing position, wielding a knife or a pair of sharp scissors.

And what I learn at work is that de-escalating behaviour works better than showing how dangerous and tough you are.

And why don't you shave black hair? Curious about that. I can understand the not cutting, but not the not shaving. Is it still about the hair then, or about the person having that hair?

Most fun cutting hair I ever did was on a woman with two hairtypes. She was double pelted. Courser straight hair, and softer Merino wool like hair. Was almost like sculpting. Awesome. Did do her hair for a few years.

Wolfish has mixed hair - some hairs are straight and others curly. He cuts his own with hair clippers because in many places he has lived they don't cut that kind of hair. Haircuts are also expensive. The clippers cost $5 on clearance 8 years ago.
It's easy because he just uses the attachment for length. Short hair requires a lot less maintenance and is infinitely ruffle-able.

Actually I sort of wondered if it was a setup on the part of the man who came into the shop. If there have been eight incidents in the past then the place may have a reputation around town. The guy and/or friends may have wanted to provoke skyblue for the publicity, in order to make a stand for black rights.

Might as well get shouted at by an old fashioned modem Unless you happen to speak one of the khoisan languages that is. Otherwise, chances are you wouldn't even be able to imitate it, let alone understand it. The group is a genetic, as well as linguistic isolate, or very close to it (there are a couple of other unrelated languages that use that kind of click consonant in their vocabulary though iirc.

Considering their lifestyle, remote location and lack of modern technology, there probably isn't very much chance of there BEING many of them at all on either the american continent, north OR south, or the UK landmass. Or europe. A few, probably, but I doubt there are very many san, or koikhoi (the people that used to be known as hottentot, which is, apparently, somewhat rude,
as it means in their language 'he who stammers' or 'stutterer', presumably due to the linguistic structure, and that funky clicked speech.

Something tells me those are probably really difficult languages to master for non-natives, or those who haven't spent time actually in the company of a living speaker of the language(s) given how there is nothing in western speech to make comparison to. Kinda like the difficulty, relatively speaking of learning tonal languages like chinese, japanese, korean etc., although these at least feature modulated pitches/tones related to existing sounds whereas the ones in the khoisan group, the ones which differ from western languages, are about as alien to our tongues as they can get. I've read a little of some of those languages, and even with specific (written) instructions and recordings it was difficult to impossible for me to reproduce 99% of it, at least, the unique, clicked parts. A few words of chinese, that was managable, but not koikhoi or san.

An interesting people, I've always been quite amazed really, how people who possess little more than digging sticks, loincloths, knife and bow/alatl.woomera etc are able to survive in such hostile environments, living entirely off natural resources. I can manage that HERE, but I'd likely be in deep shit if I got dropped off in the middle of some fucking desert (I don't like the heat HERE let alone africa/australia.

If you can ever watch Naked and Afraid, it's good.  2 people, no clothes, a canvas shoulder bag and one item of survival each.  Put in the wilderness for 2 weeks (varies).  They must survive and make it to a pick up  point.  Yes, they have a film crew and a medic available (supposedly only medical emergency contact.)  I know it's edited (and blurred in strategic areas), but I sort of like it.  There's an extended version where teams of 4(?) are put out for a month.

A South Carolina barber refused to service a black man who came in for a shave — then pulled a gun on him, police said.

The Rock Hill barber, Larry Thomas, admitted to the Daily News he cast out the black customer, Arthur Hill. But he insisted he wasn’t being racist — claiming he simply doesn’t know how to cut “black hair.”

“I was educated here in 1964, it was very segregated — we weren’t told how to do black hair,” said Thomas, 65, who says he has been a barber for 51 years.

“There’s a preciseness of it — the guys who cut black hair are real artists.”

He said black customers usually refuse his service anyway when they come in and see that he’s white.

“I stick to middle-aged white guys,” Thomas said.

“My business is a white business.”

But Hill, the would-be customer, said he went into Thomas’ shop Tuesday just asking for a simple shave.


“He said, 'I don't do black hair,’” Hill told WCNC.

“I asked him does he shave, can he shave me, and he said, ‘I don't do black hair.’”

Hill said Thomas, within moments, gripped a snub-nosed .38-caliber revolver.


Hill left the shop without further incident, and reported the barber to police.

Thomas was arrested and charged with pointing and presenting a firearm, but he was back at his business after spending one night in jail and posting $3,000 bond.

Thomas said his case will go to trial, and he cannot keep his weapon in the shop until the case is closed.

Police said the hotheaded hair-snipper has been involved in eight similar incidents since 2007, including one in which he used pepper spray on a customer during an argument.
