The only national (American) movement I am aware of that was actually claiming religion as a religion (rather than a political statement like the First Church of Cannabis is currently) is the Rastafarian movement.  They tend to be darker, and therefore face more of an uphill climb.

I didn't know about Jack's neighbors, or anything about this subject in Europe.

I don't believe that the marijuana issue actually has anything to do with religion, in that I don't believe that smoking marijuana actually constitutes anyone's deeply held religious beliefs (this of course is opinion and I'm not interested in arguing about it).  I think freedom of religion is brought up a lot in this context as it represents a liberty interest that the government has a difficult time arguing against.  So, I believe that the religious argument will eventually win when government finally decides to quit the drug war as it represents an easy first step out. 

The drug war IS finally being surrendered, and it has everything to do with race.

Seem to be separating practice and belief; not sure if that's possible. Still, freedom of religion doesn't mean freedom from the law when it comes to practice. On the point of the legalities of pot changing, cant see it as a race issue but rather has always had more to do with religion.

The CBD is getting quite some credentials. And serious studies are happening on what it can do. It is not psychoactive in the sense of getting people high. But there are strong indications that it can be used as an anti-psychotic. And as medication against anxiety. With the benefit that it comes without the side effects that the regular anti-psychotic drugs have on for example metabolism. Some kids with epilepsy seem to react well on it too, and there are researchers testing on mice what CBD could do in regard to autism.

Even if the research were all there, and such medication was FDA approved, manufactured and distributed by parasitical companies to the masses via physicians and their prescription pads, this would still be a story involving the legalities of non-medical professionals producing an alternative medicine from a controlled substance.

Marijuana and medications made from that or other cannabis plants like hemp may go booming, the moment Monsanto has the patents on some plants.
