Today's Google Doodle is Celebrating Gumbo

This Doodle celebrates gumbo, a dish that might blur the lines between soup and stews, but has become a staple in Louisiana’s cuisine. With all eyes on Louisiana this month, it’s the perfect time to savor this iconic dish. Gumbo boasts a rich history, drawing from West African, Native American, and European cultures. Its name originates from the Bambara word for okra, gombo.

There are many takes on gumbo recipes. Some are thickened with okra, while others rely on the unique flavor of filé, a spice derived from sassafras leaves, courtesy of the Choctaw people. Meanwhile, Louisiana gumbos often employ a roux, a classic French technique that involves cooking flour and lard to create a flavorful base. While recipes differ from kitchen to kitchen, one thing remains consistent: gumbo is always served with rice.

Gumbo’s cultural significance extends beyond its delicious flavors. Every bowl serves as a living reminder of the intertwined histories of West Africa, Native America, and Europe that have become synonymous with Louisiana cuisine.

As the excitement for the big game in New Orleans builds this weekend, it’s time to start simmering a delicious pot of gumbo!

It's not really a big deal here, but the flower seller on the side of the road on the way to work was doing good business.

Today's Google Doodle is St. Patrick's Day 2025

This annual Doodle celebrates St. Patrick’s Day! On this day each year, millions of people around the world honor the patron saint of Ireland with parades, parties, and all-green outfits.

Although St. Patrick’s Day was originally observed as a religious holiday, it has since evolved into a worldwide cultural phenomenon, particularly in countries with large Irish communities. Grand celebrations take place in cities including Dublin, New York, London, and Montreal. Wherever you are in the world, you're likely to find a touch of green, a lively celebration, or a shared sense of Irish spirit.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Today's Google Doodle is Celebrating Cherry Blossom Season

Spring has sprung, and with it, the breathtaking beauty of cherry blossoms! This Doodle celebrates the fleeting beauty of these delicate pink blooms, known as sakura in Japanese. Cherry blossoms are the national flower of Japan, so March and April are always a special time for hanami (花見), the tradition of flower viewing.

The cherry blossom bloom only lasts a few days! Many people track the bloom so they can time trips to parks and gardens to witness this spring display. Large Cherry Blossom Festivals are held in cities across the world including Washington D.C., Amsterdam, Tokyo, and more!

Take some time to stop and smell the cherry blossoms during this special week of the year! 🌸

Unfortunately, when I went to Japan it was their summer. It was stinking hot in Tokyo.

Yep, I went to Takayama which is in the centre of the main island, Ako, which is the sister city of Rockingham where I used to live, and Hiroshima which was our last stop. We went on a lot of shinkansen!
