I agree with Rage.
Multiculturalism as defined and taught in the states means that we work very hard not to offend anyone and we crush anyone who disagrees with our world view that everyone is beautiful and equal and all that.
But the truth is we are not all equal. Since discrimination is alive and well and hardwired into us, we will always need a reason to fear, or worse, hate someone who is different. I say hate is worse because it binds you inextricably to the hated object. A scary thought. I'd much rather be scared first and then indifferent.
Diversity is good. It puts life into dead markets (if you're into capitalism) and it varies our gene pool.
I've seen this in Canada. Somehow diversity is alive and well and people seem not to care that there are Arabs and Africans and other ethnicities working side by side or holding hands while they push the stroller with their multiracial child. On the other hand, let them know that you have just moved here and the first question is, "Are you working?" The Canadian government has convinced their people that people who move here from other countries, regardless of color or ethnicity, want to take away all the menial Canadian jobs that Canadians don't want anyway. And since that includes white people from European countries, color isn't what they look at.
There are attempts at multiculturalism but mainly they fall flat. Asking to come here and claiming that you were targeted because you were black might get you past the first interview but this guy, if his criminal record is true (and they would check) would be inadmissable on that basis.
So I don't get why, regardless of what he did after he got here, this guy was allowed in. With a criminal history and dark skin he's a different kind of target, as Walkie implied. Also, regardless of color, you can't get convicted of alcohol related offenses without a breathalyzer test. 13 months means property destruction, or if he had a good lawyer, he hit a pedestrian and then lied about it.
Making allowances for people on the sole basis of multiculturalism is a crock. People have different histories. If you grew up in the inner city of any place and you had dark skin, the odds were that your education sucked. But when you turned 18, you became responsible to fix that. A lot of my students have done that, while others cry that they should get an A in my class just because Obama made it possible for them to attend school.
Call me what you will (and my mother sure did) but if you cannot read, you don't belong in college. Yes, if the college admitted you, then they have a responsibility to fix the mistake they made in admitting you. It's called remediation, and a lot of community colleges do that. Being multicultural doesn't mean I give you an "A" because of all you suffered. It doesn't mean that I should let you into my country with a criminal history just because you think it happened because of discrimination.
However.
Has it occurred to anyone at all that the photo of the corpse has been posed? Rapists don't do that. That body clearly has been posed, and it raises my suspicion about what really happened. I don't know. I just know what I see: a posed corpse, and pictures of the suspect that for the most part make him look like a gang banger or a miscreant. BTW this is why I don't put pics on the internet or allow strangers taking selfies anywhere near me.
Bottom line: multiculturalism is a crock. Diversity is great, but people will use incidents like this to fight against it because they are frightened. Fear tends to be the main justification for violence. What if the two mysterious men had been white? Somalian? Green aliens? It doesn't matter. The face that was put in the media was designed to make us afraid of people with skin this color. The facts of the case are irrelevant to enemies of diversity. They're fighting a losing battle and that makes them more and more afraid.
OK, I'm ranting. Off to find my wet blanket.
