Yeah I kinda suck at that whole "following orders" thing. That's why I couldn't take any more than 4 years in the Marines.

Actually I had to google SR9 because after I sold my P91DC I lost interest in Ruger autopistols. My impression was that all Ruger autos (at the time) were bulky, clunky, unrefined and had mediocre triggers. This was back in '97 so I guess they've improved. The exception to this, of course, is the Mark II family since those have always been good plinker/target pistols.
 
The only issue I'd have with the SR9 is that the 9mm overpenetrates and just punches 9mm holes in people without doing much damage (unless you hit something critical). You can actually get more knockdown power by using reduced loads with a bullet that's designed to expand at lower velocities. If you have bullet casting equipment, you can make your own out of soft lead that will rapidly expand. Forster makes a tool to turn any cast bullet into a hollow point. I've never used them but I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work.

Honestly, my son (who has just recently developed an interest in weapons) keeps asking me why I do not own a lot of 9mm weapons other than an ancient Browning Hi Power. I keep trying to tell him I am a large caliber guy and 9mm is just fine for learning how to shoot, but ...

Last  Saturday we were in a local shop and we handled (for my first time, too) an  XDM model in 45 Auto by Springfield. It was not bad at all, but  he was overwhelmed ... Way too much gun for a fifteen year old. Yup.
We were actually there to buy him his first Ruger .22LR pistol for practice and ...

Part of the test:
There is no such thing as an aluminum framed SR9.

It is a P98 from many years ago in beautiful condition. Hammer fired, double action/single action = no bullshit. Large, clunky, full-sized 9mm, damn big thing to help my son learn to shoot a full sized weapon, great pillow weapon, adjustable sights, three magazines, pretty as a damn swimsuit model, barrel as shiny and crisp as a new tool, slide tighter than my best 1911.

I bought it. It was like taking a fancy used car test drive. I was allowed to shoot it before I bought it, but, FUCK!! two guys standing there telling me what to do?  Nope, nope!  When I was done with two magazines, I wanted a third to take both these fuckers out, center mass.

Are you actually trying to say that even though they are more difficult to carry concealed, a forty five is far superior to a nine  mm?  Seriously?

No, not at all, I'm talking about terminal ballistics. There's a good reason that organized crime uses small caliber handguns to commit murders, it's not just the reduced noise, it's the fact that small caliber bullets tend to expend all their energy into a target, causing more internal bleeding, thereforemore likely to kill than a larger caliber that punches a hole in the target without slowing down much. The 9mm is notorious for this which is why the military likes it, it tends to wound without killing, removing 3 people from the battlefield instead of just one. The .380 would actually be better for concealed self defense than a 9.

What I think might be  cool for you to know,  is that when we met, I was carrying a standard 1911 forty five (in my belt), just as I always had, unless I was driving, in which case I would most likely be sporting a forty four magnum of some sort.

(My two forty fours and my shotgun (Remington 1100 'Kay call me a pussy... I think 1100 is superior to most ) were in my car)

I could not spot your gun, you being better at this than I am, with all your training and such.

Honestly, I did not trust you any more than you might have trusted me.  But do not take any of this as any more than any other American meeting for the first time any other stranger.

BTW, I think it was cool that we both brought beer, too.

Yeah, it was. I was a bit disappointed in that Samuel Smith's that I bought though. That beer is somewhat inconsistent in quality.

I bought it.

The Ruger P series pistols were reliable and well made, that's about it. The triggers from the factory leave much to be desired. Accuracy in mine was acceptable but I wouldn't try to win a shooting contest with one.

If you bought this for your son, it would make a great first full sized auto for him but I'm sure he will move onto something more refined once he gets good with it.
