AirAsia passenger jet carrying 162 people lost contact with Indonesian air traffic control early Sunday, gripping Southeast Asia with a second missing plane crisis in less than a year.

The search operation for the missing AirAsia Flight QZ8501 has been halted for the night, but big ships won't return to shore and will leave their searchlights on, according to the Indonesian Transportation Ministry.

Before communication was lost, one of the pilots asked to fly at a higher altitude because of bad weather, officials said.

The aircraft, flying from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore, went missing as it flew at 38,000 feet over the Java Sea between the islands of Belitung and Borneo -- a heavily traveled shipping channel with shallow waters, according to Indonesian authorities, who are leading the search and rescue operations.

The missing plane is operated by AirAsia's Indonesian affiliate, in which the Malaysian company holds a 48.9% stake, according to its website.

As word spread of the missing plane, the airline changed the color of its logo on its website and social media accounts from red to gray.

Mourning and seriousness has different colors, from culture to culture.
While not overly obvious, grey is definitely sadder and more lifeless than red. It is likely a way for them to temporarily change to "mourning colors", by removing a cheery vibrant factor from their logo.

Thanks for explaining that, Zeg, and for reminding me. A woman at work recently explained what the color red means, though forgot about that because it was part of a different conversation, of which I was merely an observer will little interest, because topic was the symbolism of the animals within the Chinese zodiac. Someone said something erroneous about elephants, and she made the point that not all Asians are Chinese. Was about to ask her if the term is considered offensive, but the conversation was interrupted at that moment with other matters. Thanks for reminding me, I still want to ask her that question.

I keep telling people, when ships or planes "disappear mysteriously" over the ocean, then it really isn't that much of a goddamn mystery, is it!?
It's most likely IN the ocean.
