Un-Credible
« on: March 18, 2007, 07:53:37 AM »
Something that always bothered me when I was younger, not so much now, was that it seemed noone would believe anything I told them, as if it was unreliable just for coming from me.  EG   When I was 16 I got this "beavis and butt head"  CD, http://www.amazon.com/Beavis-Butt-Head-Experience-Bevis-Butt-head/dp/B0009SRU9C  which had on it a rare Nirvana track "I hate myself and I want to die".     I knew there was huge Nirvana at school and told him about it, thinking I could tape it for him if he wanted it.  But he just made fun of me, saying "theres no such song...you imagined it or got confused".   I could have bought it in to prove to him but I didn't want to bother.     There were other similar things like this too.

I thought I had put it behind me but I met up with some friends at Xmas and they were talking about the band NWA, remembering how great they were, and I remarked, how my favourite member of the band was Ren.  But the guy who was going on as if he was a huge fan laughed at me and said "thats a cartoon called Ren and Stimpy, not a group, there was no member of that name" and the rest all laughed too!  But there was!  I didn't push it though, I just made my excuses and left them to it.  I wanted to think about why it happens.

What makes me un-credible?   And how can I stop appearing un-credible when I know I am right?

I actually do this a lot as well. I am also considered an un-credible source of information, though I am usually correct. What really bothers me though, is when people check out the info that I give them, and then claim it as their own, without acknowledging that I was the source. -- That really fucks me off.

Depending on my mode, I either seem to be very credible or not credible at all.

Why? I was once taken for a private detective or under-cover cop, just for asking questions about a woman I was interested in at a motel. That's what I've called overcredibility, since I never claimed to be either of it. Other times, people have refused to believe very obvious truths that I was telling them for no obvious reason at all.

If I'm talking about either a long word definition or a psychology principle, my friends assume I'm telling the truth even if I'm joking.  I'm hyper-credible in that respect.  I've also told just regular jokes people thought were real stories at first.  When I'm not sure about something, even just a little, I generally specify that I might be wrong, so I think that helps as well.

You win this thread because that's most unsettling to even think about.

As in, we're always credible, or always un-credible?
