I read the article. 

It depends on what you see as the 'cake'.  My cake is Europe.  It is a whopping cake,  filled with jam and cream and chocolate frosted.   The more we integrate with Europe - the bigger my slice gets.   Other Brits just want a Brit cake,  and their slice gets smaller whenever we open up to Europe.

I just don't understand why people want a dried up sponge cake with no filling and little topping.

That view seems to work under the assumption of being willing to emigrate from Britain to find a job elsewhere. That's something that some Brits may not be willing to do.

Here, we get a lot of guest workers from poorer EU countries, mostly because they'll work for well below the standard wages. Often below the minimum, too. That kind of money won't get them very far here but will certainly be more than what they'd make at home.

Until those economies catch up to at least some degree, this is going to be a problem.
