I'm munching my way through the first serial of Peaky Blinders before it vanishes from BBC i-player. I'm not much into gangster stories , and happily ignored jhe rave reviews . Never mind if it's set in Birmingham , England, just after the first World War (well that does make it rather more interesting to me. Breaks the usual stereotypes. Also makes it feel kinda homely, being set just 20 miles down the road from here. And I'm becoming increasingly intersted in the way those two World Wars fucked up a couple of generations. I think it all-too-likely we're still living with the consequences) . But what finally roped me in was the music. Firstly, the trailer for series 4 features a really amazing cover of "Wicked Game" , which I was compelled to look up. ((It's by a band called London Grammar) . Whilst looking it up, I found out that it had a theme song by Nick Cave and....oh! well, I've never , ever run across a bad drama that had such a good soundtrack. So I've finally bitten.
The weird thing is that they've m ade no attempt whatsoever to match the soundtrack with the period. But it works. It really works.
Here's that trailer:
