I can attest to that my wife was a waitress while in college and they don't even get minimum wage most places,  some places even take out tax based on your sales for tips also which really sucks if you get lots of shitty ones

I used to tip the hotel maids at the end of a trip.  then I realized that sometimes the maid on the last day wasn't the one that cleaned the room the other days.  Now I leave a tip each day.

Food service is the worst, because they can be paid below the legal minimum wage.

I do not tip anyone and did not overseas either really.
I did not visit America.
What is minimum wage? I think that it ought to be at least sustainable for the country comparability to cost of living.
I have no idea what my hourly rate is. I suppose I earn approx $40/hour in real terms, but considering the cost of living, I do not consider that very great. In Chiang Mai, that income would put me in perhaps the top 10%-20% of people rather than maybe the top 45% of people where I live. Cost of living is paramount

Not legally. What Jack is saying, precisely, is that in much of America, minimum wage is lower for tipped employees than for general workers.

Cab drivers get a fixed income based on the fact that they get tipped on top of that, here in the Netherlands. Call-centre personel from cab firms get the same income without the tips, of course.

Cleaning people at people's homes and at home childcare people are getting the most lousy pay here. The regulations suck. They have hardly any rights when it comes to sick leave, and they get no unemployment pay either.

Here the cleaning lady often gets a moonlighting, or semi moonlighting contract. And that is way below minimum wages.
It is different if you work for a cleaning company, but rights then still suck big time.
