And the cleaning lady can't? :-\

Not legally. What Jack is saying, precisely, is that in much of America, minimum wage is lower for tipped employees than for general workers.

That's fucked up. :-\

QV's link explains more. There's a minimum wage debate at the federal level now, because the minimum wage is in no way a liveable wage. Part of that debate is a discussion over whether workers with disabilities should be exempt from the minimum wage. >:(

^Is that from the awful McDonald's "budget planning" fiasco?

Not that this makes it OK, but I feel the need to point out that the issue with workers with disabilities is that they are presumed to be getting a guaranteed monthly check FOR that disability; also that there's a cap on hours one can work and income one can make and still receive disability benefits.  It's not just an issue of taking advantage of people who can't fight back (it's that too, but, well, welcome to modern capitalism).

That disability is not enough to live on is taken about as well into account as minimum wage not being enough to live on.

Some of the figures in that budget are very low; not sure who is getting health insurance for 20/month. Food and gasoline aren't included.

Yes.

Exactly. It also doesn't include taxes or family expenses and it assumes that the worker has a second job.

I smiled at  "$600 rent or mortgage."  Nice if you can get it.  ::)

Maybe they assume the non-eating person with two jobs and no gas in their car has a roommate to split the rent.

Non-eating persons are just the best!  Everyone should follow their example!

Also, $955 a month for a second job is awesome!  When I was an evening dishwasher (second job),
I worked about 50 hours per month for about $400, though there were also weekly tips which probably
added up to a monthly total haul of $480.  And those extra 50 hours a month kicked my ass!  :-\

Also, they forgot to factor in the $50 monthly co-payment for my medication.
Not complaining, though; without health insurance through work (which their budget assumes
everyone has), I would have to pay the whole cost of meds out of pocket ... nearly $400.

At minimum wage after taxes, 955 is pretty much another full time job. The non-eating people work sixteen hours per day sans gasoline. Fine examples indeed.

I guess the $100 set aside for "other" would cover the cost of food.  Not enough for me though!  :autism:

I like certain things about working in food service.  Free food is one of them.

Food and shelter should never be miscellaneous in a budget.

If we can't stick to the budget, we must try harder!  Get more jobs!  Eat less!    :whipped:
