Rusty cans and gold
« on: February 27, 2014, 07:54:47 PM »
Quote
A husband and wife are reveling in their good fortune after finding $10 million in rare gold coins buried on their property in Northern California.

The gold country discovery is thought to be the largest of its kind in U.S. history, according to David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service, which authenticated the find.

"It's quite a story. People were walking along on their property in Northern California, noticed something, began digging and they found cans of gold coins," Hall said.

"It should have happened to you and me."

The incredible find

The coins were unearthed in February 2013 by the husband and wife, who wish to remain anonymous.

They were walking their dog when they spotted something shiny on the ground.

The couple dug and eventually discovered eight metal cans, containing more than 1,400 gold coins.

I'd be digging up every square inch. :GA:

They said in one article they re-buried it by their woodpile until they could figure out what to do with it.

I scanned some online headline that said the $ may have been stolen from the US Mint.  Named the possible thief.  I this is true, will it have to be returned to the US?

No...statue of limitations or something like that. It's like running across a stash buried by Jesse James or DB. Cooper.

In other countries something like this might automatically become property of the state, but not here...yet.

That's why at times it's best to tell no one and spend it slowly,  this was a bit much to go that route I guess but I would have considered it.

I wonder if I am walking by something like this everyday without knowing

Didn't here how long they had lived on that property.

Hope it was a long time, or there's one really unhappy camper out there somewhere.

That IMO would be a bitch...sell your house after living in it for 10+ years and then hear on the news that the new owner's found gold in the back yard. Now that I could see happening to me.

Like walking past that bank envelope on the ground without checking it, I learned my lesson about that when I was 11 I just walked past my mom picked it up and there was a twenty dollar bill in it, I have checked every one I have seen since but have yet to find any money :green:

When reading the article and seeing they refuse to disclose the exact location, first thought was to wonder if they truly found it on their own property. Thinking unhappy camper next door neighbor.

Crossed my mind as well, they waited quite a while to come public with it too.

Can understand them waiting to come forward with it. Like Parts, probably would have considered spending it slowly and leaving the remainder in a safety deposit box or something for the kids to find in my stuff after am dead. Let them figure out what to do with it.

I think what they found is worth more now that they have gone public because of the publicity  but I heard they will have to give up almost half in income taxes :zombiefuck:  Selling slowly and quietly does reduce what you get for things

Wonder why half for taxes. That seems excessive.
