Would you rather all the young girls recieve proper training and safety gear which would be given to them if their obvious sport was actually recognized by asshole idealist rulemakers as a sport?

Sorry Rage but it is not very common here.  Never encountered it at all.  I did read your links and am surprised to find so many elements discussed...like weightlifting (huh wtf)

So don't know if it is a sport.  My own limited exposure to it has been through TV and films only.  It has always been a background element.  I got the impression it was just girly and and a bit of fun.  Your links presented it as something more.

If I were a parent of a daughter in the US I don't think I would encourage it.

If girls are getting hurt in such huge numbers then yes they should be provided with training and equipment.  I suppose it is a physical activity and should be recognised as all other physical stuff  ie. sport.

Yes, competitive sport; not all related to cheering for some team. Squads compete, no sporting teams involved. They cheer for themselves.

I don't understand the need for some of the stunts they perform now. All I can remember them doing were tripods, and leap frog shit.

I lasted 1 week, didn't want to join, but some of the other girls nagged me to death. What a fucking disaster that was...I'm about as graceful and coordinated as a bull. The senior that was training us was a super prissy bitch and made fun of me for 2 days. I finally lost it, chased her ass out of the gym and down the hall...end of cheerleading.

In most other sports, this would be enough to get you sidelined. A problem with cheerleading, though—and a reason that the injury rate is so high—is that there are no alternates or second-string players around to step in on most teams. And without every member present, a squad can't perform. Therefore, girls are encouraged to compete injured in the name of "teamwork," immobilizing wrists and ankles and backs with braces and tape before they hit the floor, playing through their pain.

This seems rather relevant. Why are there no alternates? Cirque du Soleil acrobats have alternates.
