Magnus Carlsen is the new world grand master of chess

His and Anand's matches lasted for days, each mach hours, their final match today was marked with a very appropriate ending, where both of them were down to very few pieces each, in fact, the exact same pieces, 1 king, 6 pawns and 1 horse. Magnus ended up sacrificing both a horse, and an oportunity to auto-win by remis, but wanted to allow Anand to fight to the last man So, the result became a race to win new queens, something both achieved simultaneously, followed by a quick sacrifice of these queens in order to massacre away all pawns.
The final turn included only one king for Magnus, and a king and a horse for Anand, but with the inevitable draw - and thus Magnus' final victory.

I plaid chess since I was little, but knowing there are such masters around, I've never ever had the audacity to claim that I am ANY kind of good at this game I know where the pieces go

I played a lot well into my teens, and wasn't too shabby when it came to random cafeteria playing

Usually I expect to lose The only win I remember clearly was because a guy had been hyped up, something you should never ever do... unless you're Kasparov Hyped up goth dude. I beat him, and surprisingly quick. He then told me he hadn't slept much that night. Hahah. Yeah, sure buddy, and I just came home from a 2 year imprisonment in Gitmo.

Less attitude please :] You clearly knew what I meant, and those pieces not only change name by the fact that things are called differently in other languages but also are called different things.

In Norwegian "knight" is "knekt" and "bishop" is "biskop", but the pieces here are not called that. The "knight" is called "hest" which means "horse", and "bishop" is called "løper" which means "runner".

I was decent at chess, though, and won the local junior championship. Didn't get me far when I was no longer part of the age group, but it was some kind of achievement. I kept on playing while at the uni but eventually my obsessions were turned elsewhere.

I had a more recent flashback of the obsession and realised that there are very good chess apps available for the iPhone. I bought the best I could find and was humiliated... by my phone.

Yes, yes, inspired by the recent fuss on tv, I contemplated finding some simple, non-complicated chess simulator for PC, but then I recalled having had those, and... I never win. Ever. I don't even come close. I get insta-mated.

Shredder is nice, though. It will measure your strength and adjust its. That way you can win. Sometimes.

Hmmm, I'll check it out. Some images present seemingly graphics intensive images, but I'm sure older versions are less so.

I think you can change the graphics rendering in the settings. It's not that demanding unless you want it to be.

I wish I was kidding about this, boys and girls, but I’m not. It’s true, San Francisco, once thought of as a bastion of liberalism in a largely provincial and backward America, has banned the playing of chess in public.
