I feel for you, noise is a big deal to me unless I am the one making it and am in my zone.  I carry a package of disposable ear plugs in the van for when it gets too loud at work even then I have walked off jobs before when the noise was just too much.  It's fairly quiet at night around here which is good as I have never been able to wear the ear plugs when I sleep.  When you go looking for a new place try checking it out at several different times of the day and days of the week just to make sure it will be okay

Is it possible to make your room block outside noises by soundproofing it? I love my mother, but she is not happy and mentions it every waking moment.

I just drowned out my mother's noise with my new earplugs. Teehee. No more noise. So happy.

The earplugs is a good idea however I dont know about the rest of you guys but trying to sleep with them in your ears presents a new set of probelms.

I have disporportionate ear holes. the earplugs lose there shape and I can garentee you one will always fall out thus causing me to wake up

You can get customised earplugs, fitting only in your ears. They cost more than the regular ones. But, there are types that are not expensive. They do really fit. And, therefor, stay in. Of course there are really expensive custom made earplugs too. They claim to block really a lot. But, sleeping would still be hard for me. With earplugs I hear my own body sounds too well.

There are the kind that your mold to the shape of your ear hole. One sec.

I dislike them because my hair gets tangled in the because it is so long making reusing them difficult. You mold them to the entrance of your ear. You do not stick them all the way in like regular earplugs.

Friday and Saturday nights we get drunken people walking up the street. Then there are the hoons in cars who decide to use our street to test how well their cars can do burnouts/make the most noise. There is also a construction site happening across the road. I sympathise.
