For another exapmle for PMSElle, take population.

If people live healthier lives, they live longer. A longer lifespan is linked with a lower birthrate, and also a better standard of living AND education AND gender equality. When you're in school you're less likely to have babies, so the avg age of new parents increases. When this happens the interval between new generations of babies is increased and the population drops. ALso, when women have more rights and access to contraception and such things, she has more choice as to when to have kids. ALso educated couples tend to put their careers and standard of living higher on their priority list, and thus delay having kids, or have less kids. Also, a better standard of living makes it easier to to have access to doctors, and healthy foods, so people tend to live longer. As humans, in every population we see that when death rates decrease, birth rates also decrease to match. So longer living and health is linked to shriking populations.

In truth, the human population won't continuously grow. It is scheduled to plateau at about 10billion in 2050.  The reason we had the big boom was because of new discoveries in medicine and public health.

THEREFORE: if you're a doctor, a teacher, a gender equality activist, a contraception provider, a nutrition provider (farmer) and all the other possible related careers, that is all a priority for healthy population maintainence.

As I said, everything is connected. The question is not what, but rather how. We have to coordinate our activities better.

There will always be people in abject misery and poverty
I2 today is not i2 of yesteryear. It is a knitting circle. Those that participate be they nice or asshats know their place and the price to be there. Odeon is the overlord

.Benevolent if you toe the line.

Think it is I2 of old? Even Odeon is not so delusional as to think otherwise. He may on occasionally pretend otherwise but his base is that knitting circle.

Censoring/banning/restricting/moderating myself, Calanadale & Scrapheap were all not his finest moments.

dunno about that. there will always be inequalities in income in a capitalist system, but that doesn't mean the poorest will always be in abject poverty. if you look at patterns of economic growth worldwide, people formerly severely impoverished are steadily increasing their standards of living. the smaller the gap between rich and poor, the healthier the society... there may always be poor, but not desperately poor.

No, I've seen it more. Looks like some people really like to feel somewhat guilty. Maybe they want to hear a "there, there, it isn't that bad"?

@Odeon, I'd like to think of myself as more of an information dispersal expert rather than a preacher.  :M

I severely disapprove of guilt tripping, fear mongering, crap like that. Which is why I stopped hanging around activists when I was 14.

Sorry, mate, but it's what your information dispersal does to me.

One of the best guilt trips I've ever witnessed is Al Gore's propaganda movie about global warming. It doesn't feel like a guilt trip at all. It's a brilliant, brilliant piece of work. Nobel prize stuff.

It manages to make the issues personal, change them from abstractions preached by Greenpeace activists and columnists to matters that concern you directly. It's a presentation tour de force.

But make no mistake. It's a guilt trip, a guilt trip by design, and a presentation I admire in much the same way I admire Steve Jobs's presentations.

The information dispersal thing was a joke, I didn't actually think u thought I was preaching.  And definitely not guilt tripping.  If anything I freak out about "OMG what's gonna happen with the world " but that's just me freaking out lol. I have better days too....or I am confused now...r u saying I am guilt tripping u?
