For others it is used as an excuse to justify a lack of effort to resolve their problems.

This topic reminds me of one time, someone explained to me this is why they watch Jerry Springer, to feel like they're 'not so bad'. It's kind of the same think, not even sure what to call it. Just because there's someone somewhere in the world who has it worse, doesn't truly have reflection on me.

My ex loves that stuff.  He called it self-fulfilling television. 

Then I would tell him to quit using words he doesn't understand.     Nothing "fulfilling" about being self-righteous enough to believe that being able to look down on someone justifies one's own faults.  The viewer is no more fulfilled after viewing than they were before.  I'd say "deluding" would be more appropriate.

I have occasionally watched telly of that ilk but I view it more as a latter day freak show or like a trip to the zoo. I don't need to watch a bunch of silliness to feel good about myself.

They actually are better now than they were some years back. At least they seem to have figured out that having surly wait staff may not be good for business.
