How many slaves work for you?
« on: August 17, 2013, 08:13:25 PM »
Go to this site, take the survey, and find out:
http://slaveryfootprint.org/

I have roughly 27 slaves working for me all around the world, particularly in China, USA, Russia, and Indonesia. I am pretty low key and broke so that would explain the low number. I have never hired a prostitute btw, but I do view porn, so I think that counts.

What effected my score most?
Gadgets (particularily DVDs I guess)
Food (fair trade)
Medicine cabinet stuff (soap, conditioner, body wash)

Can't you guys even just imagine it?

Forget practicality, or your experience....can you just....imagine?

It's there. It always was.

I wonder if there is an organisation which identifies and certifies "fair porn"...like "fair trade". If our bloody law makers weren't so fucking taboo about paying for sex and viewing porn, we might have the industry better regulated.

I don't buy it.  They ask generic questions then assume the worst case scenario  for each answer.  Boots for instance I have three pair two of which were made in Texas.

I know...for instance, food- I could easily be buying local grown food from small farmers I know.

I think their calculations are indicative of the no. of slaves if you bought certain types of products- which is nice for awareness building.

24 Slaves.

Electronics & jewelry killed me.

But half the crap I do have, I didn't buy new, or didn't buy.

That is the case with me too.

I got a 24 also which I guess is low but if you multiply that by 150 million just half of the US population you get 3.6 billion slaves which is a little  high perhaps I share them or they are only part time.

I don't buy it.  They ask generic questions then assume the worst case scenario  for each answer.  Boots for instance I have three pair two of which were made in Texas.

It is an important issue and things need to be done but stick with the facts and not gimmicks and fuzzy math sure it gets attention but it takes away some credibility.  The did you ever pay for sex question at the end which they say doesn't even count is way over the top

The slaves are shared...unless you have enslaved a person for yourself.

Also, @Parts, do you know how the leather/raw material was processed on your boots?

Whether you buy something second hand or not, you are still benefitting from someone else's forced labour.

It's not how it's processed it's where and they were made as per the label in the US with US materials. So if I go to the coin store and buy some ancient Roman coins I am still using the slaves that made them 2000 years ago? Were does it end?  The life of the product must be taken into consideration.  Also it seems they are a little off on at least one thing as per http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2013/01/06/what-on-earth-is-slaveryfootprint-org-talking-about-here/  what else are they fudging?  Facts and don't over state them or you lose credibility I told the same thing to Rage in the Agenda 21 thread

That's precisely the point.
Yes, a roman coin was made by a slave, therefore it was made by a slave. it doesn't end.

If a company was upstarted with slave labour, it doesn't matter how many years since they stopped the practice, they were still upstarted by slave labour and cannot simply wash their hands of it because time had passed.

When someone is enslaved a horrible imbalance is inflicted upon the society involved, and the repercussions of that do not automatically re-adjust. All the effort that went into maintaining someones subjectivity, into destroying their spirit of rebellion, into breaking down and limiting their self confidence- a shit ton of effort was put into that. It wasn't just whips and branding, it was a psychological game, and that game was embedded into their daily routine and culture. That entire society began to change and adjust to reflect that imbalance, to maintain that slave-master relationship.

Unless the exact same effort is put into re-establishing the balance, into destroying the master-slave cultural connotation...unless that happens, the imbalance remains, and the effects of slavery continue to be felt....generations can pass, and it will still be felt and remembered. It will not go away. UNLESS that same blood and sweat and time and effort is put into establishing a culture of respect and brother/sisterhood, as it should be.

You can add more detail, on the left.  It lets you itemize your consumption, and it allows you to state how much of it is obtained "ethically"

QFT

I started taking the survey but the sheer populism ingrained in the site was too much for me so I stopped. It is all too easy to take a few shortcuts and tidy up the numbers, and this is what they seem to have done.

I'm a white male. I have hundreds of slaves of course. I can't go a minute of the day without oppressing people. In fact, when I go to brush my teeth after my morning shower, I see a WHITE DEVIL in the mirror.

This site you have brought me is so far left it would be a foul in baseball.

Had to laugh when I got to the clothes section and the default they have set for women.

I don't own 3/4 of that shit.
I hate shopping for clothes, rates right up there with having a root canal for me.
