He sounds a little bit like one of the people John introduced me to. Compulsive liar, and able to get into trouble in the dumbest ways.

I would indeed call him a faggot to his face.

He's always acting gay as a joke so it's like I don't have to.

I do that all the time too. Acting gay is funny for some reason.

You try to gay people out as well? That is funny. I would get in on it but I don't want to send the wrong message about myself.

The key is not to give a fuck.

I find it easier not to give a fuck, when I know the people around me well enough to feel comfortable enough to let loose.

I always find it easy not to give a fuck. If I don't know the people, their opinion is inconsequential to me anyway. If I do know them, they know me well enough to know what to expect.

ITT: Be yourself, never lie.

That sounds a little contradictory. Isn't acting gay, when your not a type of lying by not being yourself?

you can be yourself and act other people, if acting other people is something you'd do while being yourself o.-

me and my brother have a whole such repoir, where we imitate/make fun of others. And we are indeed ourselves when we do that.

"Be yourself" is, imo, one of aspies worst enemies, cus
Be yourself: To an NT, means "FAKE being considerate, alturistic and fair"
Be yourself: To an aspie, means "be shy and weird, despite people distancing themselves from you"

What about acting out a stereotypical, generalised behaviour pattern? Is it truly correct to say that one can be acting themselves while acting out something else? I mean, the person would have to be an actor most of their waking hours for this to be within their normal/average behaviour set, wouldn't it?

Also, how am I being myself, if I'm being someone else?!

No. If you think its funny to do that, why hide it away?

Look, "be yourself" has nothing to do with making imitations or parodies for the sake of entertainment.

It has more to do with - don't contend to do a lot of stuff that does not fit your personality. Don't force yourself to smoke cigs, with the bad boys, if you aren't a cig-smoking bad boy, for example.

When it comes to dating it is always important: Don't pretend that you are full of brawly mannerisms that aren't really yours, because you are creating a false foundation for the girl to like you on - she might like your faked attributes, rather than your real ones.
So, yes, in dating, be yourself, because you want your partner to enjoy your company at your most honest and raw. But yeah, again, when it comes to aspies, most women want a manly man full of non-aspie traits. Many women, luckily, also want a more calm, collected, laid back and intelligent man.
Sadly, next to no women want a terrified, stuttering, helpless man :D

For that person the solution would not be to fake anything, but to gain some life experience, change who he is - and thus, still be himself but an improved version of himself. We do that all the time, growing up, improve :D

So the saying "be yourself" isn't literal? This is why I don't understand it.

We should change it to 'behave how you want'. That way you can say that you're doing what you want, and aren't pretending to behave like someone different.

If pretending is funny to you and you want to do it, then you aren't actually trying to be someone else are you? Seems pretty literal to me dude. By playing a few pretend games as a joke, you're doing just fine being yourself, since your sense of humor is part of your personality.

BAM!
