Maybe the atheism thing has to do with the founding fathers, fleeing Europe, to be free to be their type of christian. The root of the USA is way more extreme christian than Europeans can imagine, I guess. The USA is God's own country.
And McCarthy, I guess that still does have an effect. Even I, as a Dutch girl, was told how bad the commies were for christians. So, the religious origin of the USA may enhance the fear of socialism even more.
Where in Europe some strands of christianity and socialism have gone hand in hand more than once.

Somewhat surprised they went off to wish Chaves bon voyage.  Wouldn't have surprised me if they threw a piss-up in the whitehouse, but turning up to his funeral, thats a bit surprising. Chaves really pissed the US administration off at times, by more or less telling them to go fuck themselves, when they wanted to fight their dirty little false 'war on drugs' over there too. This is more from an economic context, which have blurs indeed. Many countries have blurred economic systems. Ireland for example is a mixture of capitalist and socialist economic systems. China has aspects of capitalism economically, while it still considers itself a communist country.

From an ideology standpoint, socialism and fascism are not the same. There were HUGE differences between how the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany were run, for example. Socialism aims to remove social classes and spreads the wealth without exploitation of employees, with the ultimate goal of a communist society. Fascism mostly focuses on extreme nationalism and collectivist (people doing it for the benefit of the nation, not for each other) attitudes to get things done, rather than breaking down social classes.

As a Brit,  I find it hard to understand where you are coming from.  I am obviously not privy to all the information.

I will say though,  as a foreigner,  I think he clearly loves America and it's citizens.  I have seen him make some powerful speeches in which he has sounded very passionate and genuine.

He has been a good ambassador for America IMO and even, on occasions, has made you lot appear completely normal.

Which would be awesome, since a few families own half the wealth in the U.S. But its not going that way at all. All the burden is going to the upper and middle class, while the elite reap all the benefits. Its not working the right way here, and Obama isn't even trying to stop that. He's even helping it go the wrong way, just like bush did by bailing out banks and the largest corporate interests.

The ideology is nice, but it rarely works.

How he and his family choose to live their live in none of my concern. That's his own personal business. And the same goes for him with me and my family.
