For me it is just simply "wtf are you doing putting a 5 year old in charge of a gun"  -   now you could take gun out and insert car, or drill or electric saw.    It is that simple to me.   5 year  olds should really play with toys regardless of the laws their parents abide by.

I don't think anyone let him "play with it", from what I understand reading this the mother stepped out and the kid knew where it was kept, IMO stupidity on the part of the parents, even more stupid that it was kept loaded.

My son had his first .22 at around that age too, but he was never left alone with it, and it was kept unloaded and put away with the ammo in a different location he wasn't aware of.

I know families that did the same thing and it was never an issue.

They taught their kids proper gun handling first.

Yeah. Like my family. I wasn't just given a fucking rifle and told to go and play. I was taught how to use it properly, and it took a while before I was ready to use it by myself. Common. Fucking. Sense.

Totally agree. Our neighbour let his 8 year old daughter watch his rifle when we were kids. It was illegal, but she was raised properly and would never have dreamed about using it against another kid.
