Empathy (a lil story! a xmas story!)
« on: April 23, 2013, 09:35:58 AM »
On a sidenote, I think I got plenty of empathy. I just don't act upon it. Most people have shit for empathy - it's just that when they are struck by it, they react. My dad will run across the street, karate-kick people through the air, to get first to the mother with the baby trolley, trying to get up on the bus.

On a xmas morning, my uncle on the mothers side got up. A fairly conservative man, but with a wild and loud sense of humor, the prankster of the family, one time throwing oranges up in the air, and onto himself, to my aunts great dismay, purely for having been funny doing a failed juggle. But, he is a man of seriousness also, and a Norwegian - meaning, he will not get involved with the common folk, unless he is told by police or a superior to do so. He is chief of the city fire department.

As he was brushing his teeth, readying for work, the doorbell rang. Allready he became nervous, who could be calling so early, on xmas morning? A black guy. Black as coal. Who begun to speak in very broken, heavily african accented norwegian. As my uncle was composing himself, struggling to focus, he was being explained that this guy was trying to deliver newspapers, but his car had slid off the driveway, and onto the now frozen football field, and was stuck in the snow. My uncle was still completely freaked out by having a black african savage only inches from his face, and told him no-can-do, slammed shut, hurried inside, to calm down and wonder what to do next. As he looked out the window, he saw this guy wading in the snow, doing futile pushes and nudges against his car. Now, of course, he saw the struggle, not the blackness, just some guy, he begun to think of the words, delivering newspapers. Humanity struck him. Instant regret also! He pulled his jacket on, ran outside, took his own car, told the guy to hop the fuck on, and cruised the entire neighborhood with him, delivering newspapers.
He then swung by the "student city", picked up half his tribe, and drove them all to the university (on xmas morning, mind you.). He then drove back, and finished brushing his teeth, but now feeling like super, bat and spider man at once. And the black dude didn't get fired on xmas eve, and even got to read up some more on his studies, before hurrying off to drive his bus (which they often do here. Thank God they switched to recorded readings of the next stops... )

I would have paid to hear that.  Can you sell this scene to Hollywood?

Never!
I love african accent, and as a hobby-linguist I find interesting how very difficult Norwegian is for Africans :D It is so far from their natural phonology, every word is a struggle to pronounce :D

I don't get it. Your dad was just shocked to see an African or something?

Last night I watched Bad Santa.  He showed empathy for the fat kid.
Misunderstood.

I have heard Africans speak fluent Polish.

Depends how long they've lived there. I've heard africans speak fluent too, but I always assume they have grown up here if that's the case.

Dude wtf, it reads as uncle now. I swear it said dad yesterday. Oh well.

Anyway, I still don't understand. Are Africans a problem or something where you are from?

We are just not very used to foreigners. Blacks are the most glaringly foreign of all the foreigners, they struggle with the language, and they often stand out by working extremely hard - as I implied, paper routes + university + evening jobs.

There are no real problems around them, like, they don't do crime or anything like that, they are extremely law obiding and hard working, its just that they personify "foreigner" harder than anybody else, with their total blackness and choppy speech :D They can't help it of course :D

It belongs to the explanation that Norwegians are rather xenophobic. A lot of this peace-and-love attitude we try to radiate I suspect is just overcompensation at how xenophobic we really are. We aren't afraid of brown people or any such definition - we just don't like strangers. Involvement outdoors is very rare here, if your car breaks down, people will ignore you. If you pass out in the middle of the street, people will ignore you. If you run up to someone, to ask them what time it is, I'll guarantee you they'll have a terrified facial expression by the time you get to ask them. We don't mean anything bad by it, just... underpopulated land. Not used to strangers :D

When my mother was little, Trondheim got its first negro. She told me kids crowded him, and they were all touching him

Added lil explanation in edit :D

Yes, pretty much. Small country. Skittish people.
My uncle would probably had reacted very nervously had YOU called the door, white and normal as you appear, simply because you're a stranger, and it confuses him.

I find Norwegians to be just as aspie-incompatible as everyone else.
I've tried to study and observe this balance of fear-and-peace in cultures, and Norwegians (Japanese are another example) are very nervous people - who restrain their nervousness using a lot of politeness. Norwegians are very polite. We don't think so - because our own standards are very high, and we feel we fall short - but compared to for example Spanish people - who are more "unpolite but friendly".
Norwegians will rarely be truly sincere with you, which is of course what would bug most aspies. They will give you polite banter, and you must squeeze sincerety out of them, preferably by getting them shitfaced.
