I would like some cafe-au-lait and beignets right now.  I can't seem to stop being hungry.  Beignets only weigh about 25 pounds each after they've been eaten.

In the U.S., beignets have been popular within New Orleans Creole cuisine and are customarily served as a dessert or in some sweet variation. They were brought to Louisiana in the 18th century by French colonists, from “the old mother country”,and became a large part of home-style Creole cooking, variations often including banana or plantain – popular fruits in the port city.Today, Café du Monde is a popular New Orleans food destination specializing in beignets with powdered sugar (served in threes), coffee with chicory, and café au lait. Beignets were declared the official state doughnut of Louisiana in 1986.

For beignets, think sopapillas with a french accent.  Liberally topped with powdered sugar.  That inevitably gets on your clothes.  It's almost a family tradition to wear black so the powdered sugar shows up after it drops.

BTW - they're pronounced ben-yays.  I almost choked on my coffee when I heard a tourist ask for a bee-ig-net.
Hard to believe that a food shop can survive for over 100 years basically serving nothing but coffee and beignets.  It's only been in the last 15 or so year's they've added bottled milk (for children) and orange juice.

It's funny, my standing order at McD for years wes a Quarter Pounder.  Lately I've been ordering a Mighty Kids Meal (sometimes they let me sub a cup of coffee) and I'm just as satisified.
