She's lucky that bear didn't scratch his nutsack with her femur.

Black bears aren't ferocious.

Not really no, but they could become ferocious if they misunderstand something, or are startled. Its hard to know what would do this, as bears are not human beings. :P

We can observe and learn. If startled Black Bears usually run, if bothered they bluff.

I wouldn't trust a zoo bear though...they could just snap...as would anyone in that situation.

I think a healthy respect is in order when a large animal is involved in any situation, dude.

Yeah. Original point, this woman doesn't seem to be careful enough.

She has a particular relationship with bears in her backyard.
She knows how to interact with them safely. Can't say that about most people. Notice she doesn't go up and cuddle or pet it.

She is dispelling myths that black bears will sporadically attack people. They won't. Some hunters claim they get run up trees and are stuck there hiding...well, black bears are expert tree climbers so its nonsense. Researchers who study bears are known to run up trees to see the cubs without the mother bear attacking. She will bluff and try to scare you off but she won't attack. Best not to risk it though.

Bears have had a good relationship with people up until colonists came here and started killing them off. Before that they were seen by some nations as a different kind of people. By watching them, people learned what medicines to take, because bears rarely if ever die from disease. They simply don't get sick because they are smart and know how to get rid of parasites and other things. They are such valuable creatures, even to people...and yet they get demonized, hunted, and stuck in zoos.

Especially docile are black bears....brown bears are more aggressive than black bears...But even brown bears aren't as ferocious as media makes them out to be.

It's like raccoons...definitely have to be respectful, but you also don't have to run in fright or pull out a gun every time you see one.

On that note...I do think she shouldn't be so friendly with bears. Not because they are dangerous, but because- for the bear's safety- we don't wanting it loosing it's fear of people. The less fearsome it is, the more likely it will become a "nuisance bear" and get killed.
