I try and stay out of the struggle to be the 'alpha' male it's just too much bother and pissing contests are of no interest to me most of the time.  I deal with most people the same regardless of their status.   I like staying on the outside of the pack out of the fray unassuming and comfortable with my own actions not having to impress or dominate anyone.  It   has the advantage that when you do need to assert yourself it is not seen as a shot at becoming the alpha and taken more seriously.  It also takes many by surprise which has it's own advantages.
