The Pope.
They make a big deal about him being the first from S. America...but the irony is, Argentinians tend to have a "euro-complex" about their identity. Whilst many S. American countries are comprised of large mixed populations and carry a South American identity, most Argentinians are Italian descent and as a culture tend to wish they were European. They set themselves apart by paying more attention to Europe and it's trends than S. America. (this is the assessment I received from both non-Argentinian S. Americans as well as Argentinians)
So he's the first Pope outside of Europe in awhile? and the first ever from S. America? Hardly a cultural leap.
