I made a water-lift filter for my pond out of a couple of plastic plant pots and a hose pipe, plus string, silicone sealant, filter floss etc. Hopefully it'll clarify the water a bit once bacteria have colonised the filter medium.

I don't think there's much chance of that. The filter medium is inside a couple of black plant pots, one of which is inverted, at the bottom of a murky and somewhat shaded pond. It wouldn't be desirable either; the filter depends on microbial action in the filter medium. In UV filtration, water is pumped through a chamber with a strong UV source to kill pathogens and generally undesirable organisms in the water, without affecting the microbes that live on the surface of the filter medium.
