Check the rectifier. A capacitor might need replacing. Or you could have blown the coil itself, but you should see that when opening it.

I have come within a split second of kicking my o'scope.

It died. I replaced the fuse and the new fuse went instantly. There is something wrong with the high voltage section of the power supply. Most of the circuits work, but not the HV.

If I can find out why, It will probably be expensive to fix.

:hair:

I was checking a really old one once 30's vintage and had an oil cap blow and catch fire so at least yours died peacefully

Want mine instead? I think it's a 40's model, though, so it's relatively new. :zoinks:

Sorry, I know that funerals are difficult to get through.

My 40's model works perfectly. I've been worrying about the tubes but so far no problems.

Tubes are not as hard as you think unless you get into ones used in amps then they get a bit pricey

I've never been a great believer in tube amps. I know some people prefer that sound, but I'm a bit more pragmatic.

I like the sound of tube radios over never ones. The radios are more what I deal with the tube amps made the price for some tubes I need in my radios go sky high

Ah, yes. A bit different.

I have a terrific old tube radio. I like the sound but it smells funny when I turn it on. :P

Nah, mine's not that old - it's from the seventies. It's a hybrid with a solid state power supply. It actually has a diode bridge rectifier, but until I can dig out my variable power source, bypass the fuse and carefully bring up the voltage to find out where the current is going, I can't even get past the blown fuse. My fear is that the main power transformer has a problem somewhere.

I've never been a great believer in tube amps. I know some people prefer that sound, but I'm a bit more pragmatic.

There is more difference between "Single Ended" type amplifiers and "Push-Pull" type amplifiers than whether or not to use tubes or transistors. If your listening equipment, as a whole, is capable of high enough resolution to make the slightest crossover distortion audible, then Single Ended Triode amplifiers are the only way to go.There are some Class A Solid State amps that approach zero crossover distortion, but they are extremely pricey.
A good SET tube amp is free from this kind of error, but what you give up is power. So, the pursuit of very efficient speakers becomes another issue.
You might be really surprised how seldom I turn up my two watt per channel amps, during a close listening session.

When I want to shake the floor and dance around madly, I use a big sand box, though.
