We have some here and I saw kids tossing them across the road at each other today on the way home maybe I should have called the cops

Police have taken to Facebook to warn youngsters they could be arrested for throwing snowballs at cars, homes or people who do not want to be involved in games.

The message from Crook Neighbourhood Police Team in County Durham brought a mixed response with some people accusing them of spoiling the fun.

The message posted yesterday said: "Crook Beat Team are aware that it has been snowing and that people are going to have fun in it, however if anyone is caught throwing snowballs at vehicles or onto the road, they could be arrested.

"Likewise, if anyone throws snowballs at person's homes or at people who do not want to be involved in the snow games, they could be arrested and it will be classed as anti-social behaviour."

Facebook user John Young commented: "What a joke."

But Julie Nicholson replied: "It's not a joke when the little darlings r putting stones in the snowballs b4 throwin them!!!!!!"

Paul Emmerton accused officers of "sucking the fun from everything".

Liam Graham said it was extremely dangerous but "kids will be kids".

A Durham Police spokeswoman said the force did not want to spoil fun or ban snowballs, but was issuing advice.

"Our general advice is, it might seem like innocent fun but it could have serious consequences," she said.

No arrests have been made, she added.

OK, I can see the point, and if you pack a snowball with ice or rocks or something it could really hurt someone.  I especially get the point with cars.  But throwing snowballs at a random person or the wrong house and neither causing property damage nor physical harm?  For chrissake, the cops have got to have better things to do with themselves.  Though, it sounds like they are.  I feel like there has to be a way they could have better issued their warnings.

I think ice and stones and stuff is out of order.  If you look though, the police refer specifically to 'snowballs' which are unlikely to damage property or cars anyway.

Also, i remember such snowball fights when i was a kid and if you were the one getting pelted you would scream 'i dont wanna plaaay'   -  which the police might take totally literally.

Ahhh,  it's no big deal i guess but yeah they have got other things to do other than play  'snow patrol'

Cars, the big issue is a snowball splatting the windshield of a moving car and causing an accident.

Ah moving cars, yeah i see your point.  I would never be able to hit a moving target.  Was thinking about parked.  TBH when we get snow here the cars don't move much.  Gritmen don't frequent scumsville and the housing estates.

When I was a kid we used to throw them at cars then run and hide but kids don't seem to do it much these days.
