are scum villages a good idea?

The Dutch are going to be shipping all their problem families into 'scum villages' with basic accommodation and some are even going to be living in shipping containers!

Is it a good idea?

I guess here in the UK we could ship them all to the Welsh mountains, or just anywhere in Wales

I can spot some serious flaws with this:

1.  They might form an army..yikes a chav army is quite scary!
2.  There will be a lot of 'no go' areas for everyone else.
3.  What about the kids, it's not their fault and they will be condemned to grow up like their parents.
4.  If you treat people like scum then they sure as shit are going to live like it.  If you invest in housing, jobs etc and start raising the bar, surely some of them will too.
5.  Dismisses the actual reasons for their conduct...like lack of jobs, poverty,  etc and it carefully deflects any blame from the government who are responsible for the economic climate.

I don't like it, but i am a bleeding heart socialist.

I have heard of prisoners living in shipping containers but not regular people.

How do we identify what is a problem family and what is not? Is it just people without jobs?

I am supposed to get a Department of Housing place sometime soon (not holding my breath) and my mum fears that I will end up living alongside people that do drugs and get into trouble with the law.

City not far away from here, they are having small groups of people living in "container houses". It's a project they started more than 15 years ago. And, it is about people who are so disruptive that the only solution used to be to throw them out of their houses. I've lived in that town, and I know what was considered to be still tolerable (including one in my street throwing out all his furniture in tantrums every few months). Container houses were for people with really excessive behaviour.

Instead of kicking people out of their houses, they were put in small groups of container houses, groups of people that fit together, but, that are not big enough to be called a village or a suburb.

Brought back mutual aggression a lot, and, made that people still would have a house over their head.


Don't know how the plans are Bodie is writing about. Have skipped the news a bit lately. But, I do know that the original pilot worked much better than people feared it would.



Btw, my furniture throwing neighbour quit demolishing his windows and furniture, after he got a job at a demolition company.

Positive side effect, of the "scum villages" that are a success is that people tend to be kind a self-correcting. People become more adapted to live with other people in the same neighbourhood. And, the aim is to get them back in regular housing.

I think we should put rich people in gated communities where their snooty ways won't endanger our life styles.  Don't let them on public transportation, make them provide their own.  Make their children go to restricted schools so our kids won't get ideas above their station.  And make them eat cake.

Not the project I know of. Those were people that were about to be evicted, because of the misbehaviour and threatening of neighbours. And, you have to make it really bad, before that happens here. It's not about not mowing your lawn, or silly things like that.

Like I said, the guy in my street, who had his furniture tantrums (in a very crowded three layer houses street) was not someone who would get evicted or put in container house. Not about things like that. And, he did cause real damage to his rented flat.

My aunt informed me the USA has gated areas like that already.

Yeah, my first thought was "whats wrong with normal shanty towns?" why go out of their way, to ACTUALLY re-create the 1930s Ghetto-concept!?

I think it is wrong and stupid.  A whole generation of these peoples kids are gonna grow up into feral criminals and when they get to eighteen they will want to explore...

I still haven't seen the plans you refer to. I only know the old pilot plans, and, they are aimed at de-escalating and, after that, reintegration in society. Would not surprise me if new plans are way more absurd, but, have not heard about them yet.
