It's pretty much how they do things here, too. Any excuse will do. For some reason they've not managed to introduce Thanksgiving yet.

It's a surreal "holiday".  I watched part of the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade this year and a tribe of native Americans had a float.  They were giving thanks for the genocide of 99.999% of their people.  Somehow ... there was profit in it.

It's fucked up. I keep telling my family that we should skip Christmas since we celebrate it for all the wrong reasons, but for some reason they think the stress is somehow worth it.

The only thanksgivings I am aware of are harvest and labour thanksgivings. An hour of church on a Wednesday evening, as a kid.

In a few very strict Calvinistic areas in the Netherlands, like the fishing place Urk, they make it into something big. Day off from work, and prayer all day. No stuffed birds or costly festivities though.

It seems to be mostly an American thing. It's only spreading because of teh interwebz.

Well, it's tied to american Thanksgiving.

Thank you for your money? :zoinks:

Pretty much.  Traditionally the retailers would hold off on hawking Christmas crap until the day after Thanksgiving.  Now they start the day after Halloween, or sooner, so the date is just a holdover now.

I remember walking through Hertis (sp?), a large department chain store in Munich, in late October, 1973.  They had their Christmas decorations out on the aisles and countertops.  I actually said to myself, "What??? It's not even Thanksgiving!!" :facepalm2:

I have shopped on Black Friday before, but not every year including this year.  One year, we bought our big flat screen TV for much less than the regular price at the time, as well as our stainless steel ceramic top stove.  Another year we bought a lot of stuff for our daughter's Christmas when she was two years old.  One year I went alone to a sale at a fabric store on Black Friday and passed a woman having a bicycle accident, stopped and drove her to the emergency room.
