They can be. There is a cinema in El Cerrito called the Rialto Cinemas El Cerrito that is a refurbished old theater with character that I love.

For me having an older child means seeing animated and juvenile movies.  The last 3 or 4 movies I've gone to have been animated.  The last real-life people movie I was was Deathly Hallows 2.

I love some of the old cinemas as buildings but the screening quality can be horrible. I'm not your average cinemagoer, I'll admit, but I wish some people would bother to maintain their equipment, at the very least.
